A man was brought before a tribal chief, who asked him a question. He did not know the answer. If he had known the answer, he probably would have died. He didn't, and lived.

Wow - that sounds interesting!

Was the question personally related to the man? to the chief? to religion? other?

Was the question:

"What is the shape of the birthmark on my daughter's left buttock?"

If, by any chance, Boroean didn't hit the nail on the head, is it the same idea? That if the man had been doing something wrong, he would have known the answer?

Did he say something that was misunderstood? Was it something he said that saved him? Something he did?
Is the question about the surrounding area? A riddle? A trick question?

At the time the question was being asked, did he wish he knew the answer? Did he know the consequences of knowing/ not knowing the answer? Did the tribal chief ask the question to find out if the man was guilty? Was the tribal chief asking for help?

Was it a yes/no question?

Did it require a particular knowledge?

If he did not know the answer but answered the question correctly, did he guess? DId he say "I don't know?"

The man "did not know the answer" but "answered the question correctly"

so:
(similar to Alizon's question)
Did he guess the answer correctly?
Did he answer non verbally?

Was it technically possible for the man to know the answer?

Was the chief asking about a thing? a person? an idea? something else?

If you asked us the same question, do you think it would be appropriate? would we feel offended? confused? indifferent?

If the man had known the answer, would he have said "I don't know"? Is that the actual answer?

You're kidding! wow. wild shots in the dark work sometimes. I wasn't expecting that.
So, did the chief ask him "Who's on third?" and he correctly answered "I don't know", but he didn't know he answered correctly?
Did the man know the "Who's on first" routine? Did he know that "I don't know" was on third?

Did the man know the "Who's on first" routine? no Did he know that "I don't know" was on third? no
Now you just have to figure out why he probably would have died if he knew the correct answer.

Because he would've said "No, Who's on first, I Don't Know is on third." and been killed for correcting the chief (who can't ever be wrong)?

Because he would've said "No, Who's on first, I Don't Know is on third." and been killed for correcting the chief (who can't ever be wrong)? That is it...

A man was brought before a tribal chief, who asked him a question. He did not know the answer. If he had known the answer, he probably would have died. He didn't, and lived.

The native chief asked him, "Who is the third baseman in the Abbott and Costello routine 'Who's on First'?" The man, who had no idea, said "I don't know," the correct answer. However, he was a big smart aleck, so if he had known the answer he would have pointed out that "Who" was the first baseman's name. The chief, being quite humorless, would have executed him on the spot.

**********SPOILER******************
The native chief asked him, "What is the third baseman's name in the Abbott and Costello routine 'Who's on First'?" The man, who had no idea, said "I don't know," the correct answer. However, he was a big smart aleck, so if he had known the answer he would have pointed out that "What" was the second baseman's name. The chief, being quite humorless, would have executed him on the spot.
