You all know the usual vending machines selling snacks, softdrinks and the likes. You probably have heard of some japanese vending machines selling used panties. But I'm pretty sure you will be puzzled about this:

There is a vending machine somewhere in Germany that sells ordinary stones - and it is making quite an amount of money. How comes?

Apart from the title, this again has nothing to do with Monty Python - sorry...

They were a craze a couple of decades ago - rocks that obeyed every word, as long as that word was 'stay'

Are they big stones, or tiny pebbles? Are they decorative?
Do you get one at a time or a handful?

Does the "Buyers of Rocks" have a chance of winning something?
Is someplace "provided" where to put the rocks? where to drop them? throw them?
Is there anything at all soecial with the rocks? or is it the place where they're sold? would anyone buy stones from a similar machine in Hamburg? if that exact machine with those exact rocks were to be moved to Hamburg - would people buy stones from it?

BTW, when the "Pet Rock Craze" died out the next thing someone made money from was the "Pet Rock Cemetary"...

Hi Martin!

Will the people buying the stones expect to get some sort of result from "using" them? like a very much delayed sound after dropping the stone in a several hundred meter deep mine shaft? getting animals scared after having thrown the rocks at them? getting an echo? anything else sound-related?

***** SPOILER *****

There is a vending machine somewhere in Germany that sells ordinary stones - and it is making quite an amount of money. How comes?

I forgot where exactly, but there's a memorial or something somewhere in Sachsen which attracts quite a number of tourists. Near the site, there is a deep well. Because it's always in the shadow of nearby walls, you can never see the ground, so a lot of people throw in stones to wait and listen for the splash. Eventually, there were no more stones anywhere near the well. So they installed that vending machine for stones.

You don't get the stone, however. It is directly injected in the well. But your 0,50 Euros will also activate a microphone deep within the well and some speaker boxes, so that the splashing sound will be clearly audible.

The filter (under the water surface) is emptied twice a month, refilling the vending machine. You see, in Germany we even recycle stones :)
