Because Jonathan ate less than usual one day, I had a particularly good meal, although I didn't eat any food or spend any money that otherwise would have gone to Jonathan. How come???? |

Because the person(s) who normally prepare Jonathan's meals were alarmed at the change in his eating habits and so began using extra care and extra fine ingredients when preparing meals? Is Jonathan a food critic? Were you asked to sample the same dish to see if there was anything wrong with it? |

"Particularly good meal"- Does this mean it was good in quality? quantity? Both? Was the food prepared by someone else? If so, in a restaurant? Are there other relevant people? If so how many? Any relevant non-human animals? Did you have the good meal the same day Jonathon ate less? Within days? Weeks? Months? (etc) Do you know Jonathon personally? Jonathon's age- 0-9, 10-19, 20-29, 30-49, 50+? Anything relevant about Jonathon- The reason why he ate less that day? The type of food he ate less of? Age? Occupation? Relationships? Race? |

The reason/s J ate less that day: Dieting? Fasting for some reason? (religious, charity fundraiser, etc) Unwell? Not hungry? Not enough money? No or reduced access to food? Provided with smaller portions than usual? In order to engineer a situation where you &/or others ate better? No particular reason? Other? Did he want to eat less? Did he know he was eating less? Did he know you would eat better? Did anyone else eat better? When you say "ate less than usual", do you mean less than usual for Jonathon? |

was it a political fund raiser? is it relevant who would benefit from the funds? was a charity involved? did you disagree with the aims of the fund-receiver? was it anything like this.. he told you he was going to fast to raise money for a particular cause, and asked you to join him. You, disliking the cause for which he was raising money, decided to show your disapproval by refusing and, in fact, going out to have a slap up meal to compensate! Aha! I've got it! He was saving his lunch money to contribute to the Struggling Actors' Fund and you demonstrated that the easiest way to get money to a struggling actor is to leave a big tip...no? Was his fasting resulting in money for someone else? Or was it more that he was skipping a meal to save the money he'd've otherwise spent? Is your objection that fasting isn't very healthy? Or simply less effective? Are there any relevant people working at the restaurant? |

Did you just think it was silly that Jonathan and his fastmates were putting themselves through a period of discomfort in order to get people to donate money to charity? When they could just as easily do something pleasant, and get people to donate just as much money to charity? So you decided to take the latter route? |

But I think it is ridiculous the way they have college students fast & donate the cost of the meal to the Third World & also ask other people to sponsor them. American college students virtually never need to fast in order to cointribute the cost of a meal to the Third World. Why pretend otherwise? I doubt that poor people in the Third World world are impressed when comfortable people in the First World play at poiverty. So whenever I hear about an Oxfam fast, I go to a nice restaurant, indulge myself in a fancy meal, & then donate the cost of that meal to Oxfam. Thankfs for solving it, Buzzard, & please check out my new puzzle at the bottom of the page. |
