Was he showing off that he could roll up his sleeves and do some manual work?

I am a bit lost as to what remains to be discovered here. We seem to have a scientist who has got under a piece of laboratory equipment, and banged his head on getting back out from under it. Apart from that...

Apart from that... ...this all came about as a result of his effort to impress some people. I don't think you know so much about that part yet.

I don't. Were these people students? colleagues? visitors to the place where he worked? scientists?

Was he trying to get said apparatus to do something that isn't part of it usual operation (such as using a centrifuge to mix drinks...), but is construed to be impressive?

Or along the same principle, something that is quite often forbidden in the lab environment, but in this case, he was using it as an example to make his subject appear more appealing to the group? (explosions, whizzing things, luminescence, sparks... etc)

Perhaps the reason he banged himself was an involuntary response to touching something either hot (though we've established this is not the case) or possibly electric, in which case he would've straightened up quickly - right into the underside of the apparatus.

Were the people he was trying to impress in the same room with him when he banged his head?

Did he ever meet these people he was trying to impress? If so, how long before meeting them did he bang his head?

Was there, from the point of view of the people he was trying to impress, any sign that he had banged his head?

I am lost, as usual. Are these other people actually relevant at all? Or do we need simply to work out how OH came to bang his head on whatever it was?

I am lost, as usual. Are these other people actually relevant at all? well, it was relevant that he was trying to impress them, and how... Or do we need simply to work out how OH came to bang his head on whatever it was? ...and how this led him to bang his head on whatever it was

Was the only reason he went anywhere near this machinery that he was trying to impress these people? Or could he have banged his head on the machinery in the normal course of events?

Was the only reason he went anywhere near this machinery that he was trying to impress these people? no Or could he have banged his head on the machinery in the normal course of events? no - if he had not been trying to impress them, he would have gone about his business with the machinery and not banged his head.

Was he, then, attempting to do something wrt the machinery that he would not normally do? Does it matter what kind of machinery it was?

Was he, then, attempting to do something wrt the machinery that he would not normally do? no, but he was going about it in a slightly different way than he would normally do Does it matter what kind of machinery it was? The only things you need to know about the machinery is that for him to do what he needed to do, he needed to be underneath it, and that the underside of it was about as far off the floor as the underside of a table.

Is the idea, then, that he was trying not to get his clothes dirty (since this would be unimpressive)? and was thus moving around under the machine in a fashion that rendered a collision between it and his head more likely?

************ SPOILER ************

A colleague of mine (with a very nice smile but an unfortunate tendency to leave paper plates lying around offices that aren't his) was injured in an effort to make a good impression on a bunch of prospective students. He was working in lab in the morning, and, knowing that he would have to meet with these people in the afternoon, didn't want to get his clothes dirty. So when he had to adjust something underneath his experimental apparatus, instead of crawling on the floor like he usually would, he sort of squatted, or crouched, or something, so that his trousers wouldn't drag on the ground. The result of this was that his head was several inches higher off the ground than it otherwise would have been, and the result of that was that he banged it on some piece of metal that was exactly the same height off the ground as it usually was.

Thanks to all who participated, and well done woubit, and...

From your description of the event I have a sneaking suspicion that you took just a small measure of satisfaction from your colleague's mishap ;-)

Only because I could write a puzzle about it. :)
