Did Dr. Jones simply restate the one opinion he had heard so as not to appear ignorant regarding the conversation? |

Looking for double meanings, is all, after re-reading the puzzle statement... Does/did Jones misinterpret something he overheard? Misunderstand something? Miss part of something (e. g. he heard "...industrious, sholarly--everything you expect in a professor" but missed the preceding "not")? |

Was there any sarcasm involved in the conversation? Did the conversors (conversationators?) intentionally mislead Jones? Did they know he was listening? Would someone reading a text transcription of the conversation reach the same conclusion as Dr. Jones? |

Anything like my silly statement in Sciguy47's puzzle (Ctrl+Alt+Del)? [viz. He was out standing in his field? Sorry, couldn't resist.]
Good God, Holmes, you've got it! By some weird stroke of fate that statement happens to be the exact one Dr. Jones overheard. Care to work out the few final details? I hadn't even noticed you had posted that in the other puzzle - and just shortly after this one had started. I think you must have somehow subconsciously solved this one and temporarily repressed the solution! |

That is a bit spooky, isn't it. Something like two people discussing Prof. Plum and one says "So what's he like at work?" And the other says "Oh, when it comes to work, he's always out standing in his field."? |

***** SPOILER ***** That's pretty much it! Prof Plum spends much of his time pottering about his small "hobby farm", where he works even less energetically than he does at the university. During Dr. Jones' visit, he heard it confirmed by several sources that Plum was consistently out standing in his field |
