Because of an increase in crime where she does her shopping, after exiting the store Diane left all her purchases unattended and calmly walked away. |

Is Diane involved with the increase in crime as a perpetrator? As a victim? Is the crime which is increasing related to theft? violence? criminal damage? arson? car crime? Does the shopping which Diane leaves unattended contain food? clothes? household cleaning materials? electrical goods? cutlery? Does she intend to return for her shopping later? |

Does she leave it unattended to ensure she doesn't get robbed in person? Did she leave her purse behind? Will she return for her items after it has been throughly checked by theives? Will there be items left behind for her to take when she returns? To take home? Honor System relevant? (Tit-for-Tat? Quid Pro Quo?) Did she buy extra items she she knew she did not need? And thereby expect those items to be gone? Did she meet with any theives beforehand? |

Is she leave the items directly in front of the store? In a specific location? A location only certain people can access? A general location? If she did not leave the items, would she have been robbed in person? Worse than leaving the items behind? Is there only food in the bag? |

Did she mark off an area with biohazard tape or something and leave her purchases there? Sorry if that's a little feeble--I'm still pouting over it not being a Bag o' Snakes (assorted sizes)... |

Once she got in her car, did she drive to where her groceries were? (one of the stores here has a sort of corral where you can park your cart and drive up to load the bags, instead of taking the carts out into the parking lot. They give you a numbered tag at the checkout, and hang a matching tag on the cart, and there is an employee at the corral to check your tag against the one on the cart, so the carts aren't exactly "unattended"...) |

YES one of the stores here has a sort of corral where you can park your cart and drive up to load the bags, instead of taking the carts out into the parking lot. exactly the right idea! now, just fill in why the increase in crime made her do this and you've got yourself a sp0iler They give you a numbered tag at the checkout, and hang a matching tag on the cart, and there is an employee at the corral to check your tag against the one on the cart, so the carts aren't exactly "unattended"... this doesn't happen here; they're just left out in the "corral". so, I guess the honor system actually is partly involved! |

So she could leave her purse shut in the (locked?) car while she loaded the groceries in the trunk? The increase in crime --were people being mugged in the parking lot? car-jacked? is the parking lot huge? poorly-lit? isolated? |

Oh, wait--is the increased crime the theft of shopping carts? so the store put up barriers to keep people from taking them out of a specified area? |

Will all of her items stay intact and be all accounted for when she returns for them? yes ******* SPOILER ******* After a problem with several empty (but still fairly expensive) shopping carts being stolen from the lot by teenagers, the supermarket has customers leave their carts in a small "corral" adjacent to the store instead of pushing them out to their cars. Because Diane's many bagfuls of Dr. Aahh, Mr. Aahh! and Mr. Ahhh! are so heavy, she walks back to her car and drives over to pick them up. |

I remember zooming hazardously down Hill Street in an old shopping cart when I was about 12 or so. But we didn't steal it though, we found it in a vacant lot. I swear! |

{Nice puzzle. The town I grew up in had several grocery stores that had barriers and turnstiles between the store and the parking lot so that the carts stayed up near the store. Pain in the butt to load a lot of bags ..} |
