5 minutes later, the price to see my family at Thanksgiving doubled. The airline prices were the same then as they are now, though. What happened?

Actual cash expenditure doubled? or amount of money that you would lose (time off? second job? anything like that?)

Family decided to get together somewhere other than originally planned? Do you now need to get a hotel room? where before you'd have been able to stay with a friend or family member? Did you find you would need to rent a car that originally you wouldn't have?

Gas prices relevant at all?

Did they burn the turkey (or other food) and you had to bring more?

The kids wanted more to be presuaded to go?

It costs more to get something done faster/better to get to Thanksgiving on time?

Were you:
Planning to travel on an alternate means of transportation?

Was an event cancelled?
Something personal or more general (like a sporting event or play or conference or such)?

Family reunion? No. The reunion was not called off, I'd count that as "personal."

Was there a business function (seminar, training session, professional meeting?) that you were going to attend shortly after Thanksgiving, in the same city? Would your employer have paid your airfare home from the business function? But since it was cancelled, you now have to buy your own ticket home?

Was there a business function (seminar, training session <-THIS, professional meeting?) that you were going to attend shortly after Thanksgiving Yes, in the same city? No to that last bit. Would your employer have paid your airfare home from the business function? Yes. But since it was cancelled, you now have to buy your own ticket home? And that's about the size of it. The rest is details.

****************SPOILER*******************
My family is meeting in Jacksonville this year and it was a last minute decision. I didn't want to have to buy a 600+ dollar ticket just because they didn't have the sense to plan ahead. Plus, I've got friends out here to spend the holidays with. However, when Boeing made plans to send me to Detroit for some robotics related training starting the 28th of November, I started to rethink that idea. The company would fly me to Detroit from wherever I happen to be the day before. So, my plan was to fly to Jacksonville on a Wednesday and let the company spend the big bucks flying me out Thanksgiving Sunday to Detroit, and then make the final leg back home the following week after training. Sounds like a great plan right? And the one-way ticket would only be 300$ for me... less if I apply some leftover funds I have. But then the class was changed to a beginners course rather than an intermediate or advanced programming course. So the powers that be decided not to waste my time on a basic course when I already know how to operate the robots. Unfortunately, this means I'm looking at turning my 300 dollar ticket into a round-trip ticket when it's very close to Thanksgiving (600 dollars plus tax).
