This morning I put exactly 100,000 items into a matchbox. How did I manage it?

Items not being matches, I assume? Were they molecules? Atoms? Specks of dust?

Did you put all the items in at once? One by one? Did you intentionally put them in? Was there a reason for it? Or were you just idling away time?

Is this an ordinary sized matchbox? Are these items large enough to be seen by the unaided eye?

Is 100,000 a binary number? So you actually put in 32 items?

Items not being matches, I assume? You assume correctly Were they molecules? Atoms? Specks of dust? as neat a talent as it would be, measuring exactly 100,000 molecules, atoms, or dust specks, and ensuring that no more or fewer than 100,000 entered the matchbox at any stage of the operation is an ability I do not currently possess. Nice try, though.

Did you put all the items in at once? yes One by one? no Did you intentionally put them in? yes Was there a reason for it? no Or were you just idling away time? yes

Is this an ordinary sized matchbox? yes Are these items large enough to be seen by the unaided eye? YOPE

Is 100,000 a binary number? no So you actually put in 32 items? no

Can I play even though it's not a lazy Friday afternoon yet, it's a cold windy Thursday night ?

Was it a small matchbox?
or one of the matchboxes from kitchen matches (those boxes are about 2 inches by 1 and 1/2, by 6 inches?)
from fireplace matches 2 by 2 by about 14)?

Or perhaps the box that a whole shipment of matches came in?

Into: physically within the confines of? some other definition of "into"?

Can I play even though it's not a lazy Friday afternoon yet, it's a cold windy Thursday night ? It's a lazy Friday afternoon for _someone_ here, and that's really what matters. And boy, is it a toasty one. Or maybe my perception is skewed, having just come from the plasma-chilling gales of Wellington to the serene warmth of Mt. Maunganui.

Was it a small matchbox? as above, it's a standard size
or one of the matchboxes from kitchen matches (those boxes are about 2 inches by 1 and 1/2, by 6 inches?)
from fireplace matches 2 by 2 by about 14)?

Or perhaps the box that a whole shipment of matches came in? no to all

Into: physically within the confines of? yes some other definition of "into"? I hear those 100,000 items were really 'into' that Matchbox. Schwing! I mean, no.

Can the items be physically separated into 100,000 distinct entities? Easily?
Did you put a slip of paper with 'exactly 100,000 items' typed on it?

Grains of sand?
Salt crystals?

Did you actually count?
Or did you know through other means that there were 100,000??

Exploring the Yope:

Are the individual things large enough to be seen by the unaided eye AT THE TIME you put them in?
Are they anticipated to grow in some way?

Is it relevant if you can see without aid normally (i.e. corrective lenses)?

I am dying to ask this, though this is a totally bizarre train of thought:
Are there any sea monkeys in this puzzle?
Anything like?
Steve Wort (Wizardofnz)

Well, specifically this:

'as neat a talent as it would be, measuring exactly 100,000 molecules, atoms, or dust specks, and ensuring that no more or fewer than 100,000 entered the matchbox at any stage of the operation is an ability I do not currently possess. Nice try, though.'

Unless, of course, sand and salt are in a different league to molecules, atoms, or dust specks in this respect. In which case I offer a full apology.

I was thinking you could have somehow gotten a little vial labeled - "100,000 Salt grains". Where...I have no clue. Why...also no clue. You mean we don't all do totally senseless things in our everyday life to make cool puzzles? Drat. :D

Exploring the Yope: always a good idea

Are the individual things large enough to be seen by the unaided eye AT THE TIME you put them in? Aha! NO!
Are they anticipated to grow in some way? *snicker* YES - in some way

Is it relevant if you can see without aid normally (i.e. corrective lenses)? YES!

I am dying to ask this, though this is a totally bizarre train of thought:

Okay, first - why aren't there sea monkeys? Those things are cool! Second - I am a little dazed that I haven't been around here in over a year, I never use my real name on the forum and yet quite of few of you remember it. :D It's nice...and odd.

See, I was going to ask "Not to be rude, but is the issue that you can't see the broad side of a barn without visual aid?". *grin*

Are the things:
Alive?
Were they?

Are they physical objects?
Did they all come in one package together?

The info about how many there are:
Printed somewhere?
Verbally told to you?
Intuitively known?

Are they holographic?
Is the box 'real'? Not code or an image?
Are the items "real'?

Did the 100,000 come as a group, and so that wasn't a chosen number?
Did you put them together?
Did you separate some off?

Are they holographic? no
Is the box 'real'? As in a tangible, three-dimensional object which exists by any commonsense definition? Yes. Not code or an image? neither
Are the items "real'? 1 of the items is real. The remaining 99,999 are yesishly real

Did you put them together? yes

In the interests of boredom, and setting a world record with flagrant disregard to any sort of regulatory parameters, I saved 99,999 blank microsoft word documents onto my USB Jumpdrive ('memory stick' for technophobes) and stuck it into a matchbox.

[i]Acquiring matchbox... 15 seconds
Booting up horribly obstreporous laptop... 2 minutes
Creating blank MSWord document... 10 seconds
Saving blank MSWord document... 5 seconds
Using complex copy-paste methods... 1 minute (approx.)
Transferring USB stick from laptop to matchbox... 10 seconds.

Total time: 3 minutes and 40 seconds. Time enough to play Tom McRae's 'You only disappear'.[/i]

Curiously, what is this type of formatting called? HTML? Cuz normally that would be <text=italics> </text>, or similiar. Not bbcode, or else that text above would be italics.
