Ah rats there goes my brilliant theory that Frederica was an actress and would be playing a character who wore a hearing aid in the next play she did! If at first you don't succeed...

By Howard Baynes (Zowie) on Thursday, February 16, 2006 - 10:59 pm:

My son has a different slant on the matter .... does "Frederica's hearing is fine" refer to a court hearing? no

is she a child? could she be for this to work?

for her plan to work is it necessary that the hearing aid is working?
is the noise sometimes made by a hearing aid relevant? is this an electronic hearing aid? could the same effect be obtained by an old fashioned ear trumpet? by a hypothetical hearing aid that is too small to be seen?
for her plan to work is it necessary that someone else knows she is wearing the hearing aid? that someone sees her wearing it?
will she tell someone she is wearing it? does she hope someone will notice?
is she trying to prove a point? is she planning to do something illegal? immoral?
will anyone get hurt in any way from her wearing the hearing aid? will it help anyone else?

could this puzzle work with another type of prosthesis? does it have to be a hearing aid?
is it necessary that someone else think she has a disability? is it necessary that someone else think she is deaf? or hard of hearing?
could her aims be achieved by her just saying that she is hard of hearing?

by wearing the aid does she hope to make something good happen? to her? to someone else? does she hope to stop something bad happening? to her? to someone else? does she hope to gain financially? emotionally? is romance involved? politics? education?

does she intend that wearing the hearing aid will make her appear to qualify for something? to appear to be part of a relevant group of people? to appear to be entitled to some sort of benefit?
does she think that wearing the aid will protect her in some way?

will she be wearing the aid in a particular situation? or place? with a particular group of people?
will she say anything relevant while she wears it?
would she wear it in a public place? a private residence?

By Hannah Kinghern (Kdoc) on Friday, February 17, 2006 - 10:28 pm: Hi Hannah!! Thanks for all these great questions:):):):)!! Why not direct that clever lateral brain to my other 2 puzzles as well??

is she a child? possibly but not necessarily could she be for this to work? yes. Also--BLOOOPERRRRRRRRRRALERTTTTTT!! I earlier answered both 'yes' & 'no' to the question of whether her age is relevant. So I'll tell you--she can't be a baby or toddler, but anything from about 4 up should be OK

for her plan to work is it necessary that the hearing aid is working? Remember, I earlier said the hearing aid WOULD NOT help her reach her goal

is the hearing aid going to amplify her hearing or impede it?

is there a third party?

is her hearing fine in both ears?

does she plan on doing something in the near future that will damage her hearing?

She believes she will derive some particular benefit(s) from wearing the hearing aid, but might not? Will not? Has she chosen the correct device (i. e. a hearing aid vs. an earbug/earphone)?

Did she decide to wear it because she witnessed a situation in which someone wearing a device (hearing aid, cell phone etc.) in their ear received some benefit/avoided something negative?

So her reasoning is something like "The person with the thing in her/his ear received/achieved/avoided something, therefore if I have one in my ear I will receive/achieve/avoid the same"?

Did she see someone with an earbug (something to receive messages/translations)? Like a Secret Service agent? News anchor? U. N. rep?

Is she going to wear the hearing aid in the left ear? in the right ear? in both ears? relevant?
Is she going to switch on the hearing aid?
Will it be a particular hearing aid? a particular type? from a particular producer?
Is she going to make a point in a dispute?
Is she going to show that a particular rule regarding hearing aids (regarding electronic equipment?) is nonsense? (like "switch off all electronic equipment during flight")
Is she going to make profit from wearing this hearing aid?
Will her insurance pay for the hearing aid?
Is she going to trick or scam somebody?

Fictional group of people? Real group?

Does the group receive the various normal benefits of wearing a hearing aid? Anything like she's heard that hearing aids help people understand what others are saying, and she thinks it will help her understand the intended meaning vs. the sound?

*** SPOILER ************
Frederica saw an ad on TV that urged you to get a hearing aid "if you hear but don't understand." She's pretty stupid (that's why she doesn't understand so much of what she hears!!) so she went out & bought one. Sorry it was so easy, but guess what awaits you guess where

It seems impossible that Frederica could have bought a hearing aid without someone doing a hearing test and telling her exactly what it was for. I take your word for it that it happened, but it just goes to show that too many people are way too cynical -- even those whose job it is to provide goods and services to people who are vulnerable.

The puzzle description says she is planning to get a hearing aid, not that she actually got one. Also, I never claimed it was a true story & I have no reason to believe it is. It'sjust a puzzle arising from the possibility of a stupid person miusunderstanding a very poorly stated claim--like my much earlier puzzle about someone who wanted to have a stroke becasuse she had read in a home-health book,"Half of all stroke patients eventually die," & she was hoping to be in the other half--who she thought would NEVER die. The only true element of each puzzle is that the ambiguous statement actually was made.
