It caused you to panic? Or the recipient? Or someone else?
Vanity = of your physical appearance? Of your capabilities? Or does it have more to do with futility, doing something in vain?
Did you send an email to someone you didn't mean to send it to?

Identity of recipient relevant? Adult? Male? Female? Relative? Friend? Co-worker?
Did something happen as a result of the email that you didn't expect to happen? Did the recipient do something after receiving the email? Did the email tell him/her to do something? Did he/she misinterpret the email?
What was the time interval between your sending of the email and panicking--immediately? a few minutes? hours? days? weeks? longer? Did both you and the recipient panic at around the same time?
Was the email a letter or did you send a file as an attachment? Is your occupation relevant? The recipient's?

I think my last few questions in my previous post got cut off when you pasted your reply...could you answer them please? :)
Did you expect him to do what he did upon receiving it? Did you panic before him or did he panic first? Did the two of you panic because one of you was in danger? Both of you? In physical danger? In danger of losing a job? of losing some material possession? of offending someone? losing a loved one?

Did the email consist of anything apart from text?
If so, relevant?

your effort to improve your appearance...
was it your hair you wanted to improve?
face?
body?
skin?

would the change you wanted to make be permanent?

Hi Pandora! Hi Rabrab, long time no see! :)

Would this work just as well with only one person in addition to yourself?
Did they think something bad was going to happen to you?
Had already happened to you as you sent the mail?
Had already happened to you as they received the mail?
Did they open the mail at all?
Were they upset by the subject line?

Is the double meaning of "dreads" = "panics" relevant at all?

Did you think the two recipients of the mail would see it as talking about hair? no Was the word alluding to a previous conversation that you had with them, where you mentioned your hair? no So you assumed they would understand, but they didn't? yope, they would have done, had the body of text within the email been received

Rabrab

Were you referring to the tongs? yes to what he tongs would do? noish (Subject: Toast!)

You used it as a noun; did your friends think that you were using it as a verb? as an adjective? they probably would have viewed it as a noun and there is a slight FA here

What they thought had happened: did it involve bodily damage or harm?
illness?
financial damage or harm?
social damage or harm?
legal damage or harm?
emotional damage or harm?
mental damage or harm?
damage or harm to something that belonged to you? that belonged to someone else?
that you had caused? \b {they could have thought any one fo these things}

"Help!"?

"Fire!"? no to these but OTRT

Perhaps you wanted a new look for the May bank holiday and exclaimed "Mayday"? no

Did the straightening tongs cause your hair to look worse? Was this the disaster?
They panicked because the body of the text didn't get through, and so they saw the word "disaster!" as a cry from a damsel in distress?
They then rushed over to your house to rescue you and banged the door down, causing you to think they were burglars and thus panic?

RECAP: I sent an email entitled 'disaster' to two family members, Espoc and Thp which resulted in them panicking. The reason for their panic was because they did not receive the body of the emil, only the title and they then assumed the worst. I wsn't actually in trouble at all, the email was simply something to do with my hair straighteners {which needs to be discovered). Because they panicked, they then took actions which caused me to panic (although they didn't realise their actions would have the effect they did). In order to solve:

1) What was the situation involving the hair straighteners?
2) What did Espoc and Thp do to make me panic?

Did Espoc and Thp do the same thing in response to the email?
Did either try to contact you? By email? By some other method?
Did both try to contact you?
Did either (or both) try to contact some other party?
Was the body of the mail intended to contain a picture showing the disaster in question?
Were the hair straighteners broken?
Did you (or someone) use the hair straighteners on hair in the normal manner, but the results were a disaster?

Did the hair straigteners cause damage to some other object?
To you?
Or your clothes?
Bedding?
Espoc and thp both received the email - when they received it, did each know that the other was among the recipients? Relevant?
(again, apologies if it's been covered...)
thp tried to contact you after the email, correct? Tried to contact you by phone? And failed?
Did she then try to contact another person?
Did she try to contact Espoc?
Did she try to contact someone in your family? Emergency services?
Your work?

Was it a short message? You were worried about Espoc, not Thp, right? Did Thp mention Espoc in the message? Did she ask you to come home? try to find out what the "disaster" was? Relationship between Thp and Espoc relevant?
From the hotel staff's point of view, was the message an obviously panic-inducing one?

Was the exact wording of it relevant? Did you misunderstand the message? Did you realise, at the time, that Thp was referring to your email? Did you realise that she and Espoc had misunderstood it, and thought that you had a disaster?

Did the hotel staff pass on the exact wording of the message from thp? Or the general idea?
Did the wording of the message that the hotel staff gave to you cause you to think that Espoc was in danger?

Was the exact wording of it relevant? no, just the subject matter Did you misunderstand the message? no Did you realise, at the time, that Thp was referring to your email? no Did you realise that she and Espoc had misunderstood it, and thought that you had a disaster? no

Mike

Did the hotel staff pass on the exact wording of the message from thp? probably although not 100% sure Or the general idea? this is more accurate
Did the wording of the message that the hotel staff gave to you cause you to think that Espoc was in danger? yesish although it was more to do with my interpretation of the message, there was actually nothing wrong with the hotel message in iteself simply the fact that they had called and that there was something mentioned in the message which caused me to worry

Was Thp's message (as you received it from the hotel,) "Call me, ASAP!" or something along those lines? yes pretty much

NB: {the thought has just occurred that I have failed to mention that there were in fact two messages. One from Thp which is pretty much solved as above and another one from an organisation that was mentioned before. I was thinking that there was just one message from Thp which also mentioned this organiation but in fact, I have been reminded that there were two messages - very sorry for any confusion. TO SOLVE: What was the issue with the hair straightners? what was the organisation? and what was their message?

Hmmm.
You were abroad?
or were you vacationing in your own country?
W
as the other organization international in the scope of its operations? The Red Cross? your embassy? Amnesty International?
Was it local to your vacation spot? A hospital? the local police?
Was it local to your home? Your bank? your doctor? your lawyer?

Was the organization one that you had previously had dealings with? A travel club/service? (in the US, something like the American Automobile Association?)

Did the organization's message refer to Thp having called them? to Espoc having called them?

So thp tried to call you, and because they couldn't get you directly, called your embassy?
Or called your embassy as well as trying to contact you?

Sorting this out... check me, please?

You were on vacation abroad; you had taken along (or purchased there?) a set of hair-straightening tongs.

Something went wrong (we don't yet know what) with either your hair or the tongs.

You sent an e-mail to your friends Thp and Espoc, with the subject: line "Disaster!" and nothing in the body.

When they recieved the e-mail, they panicked, thinking something horrible had happened and that you needed help. Thp called the hotel you were staying at, and left the message "Call me, ASAP!". The embassy also was called, and called you at the hotel.

This caused you to panic, thinking that something was wrong with Thp and/or Espoc.

and back to the questions:

Was the embassy you recieved the message from
your own embassy in the foreign country?
your own embassy in your own country?
the foreign country's embassy in your country?
the foreign country's embassy in the the country you were in?

Did Thp call the embassy to tell them that you might be in trouble? to ask for assistance in finding you? for some other reason?

Did the embassy also call you at the hotel? Did their message say that Thp was concerned about your wellbeing? or did it simply say that Thp had called them? ("Thp has asked that we get in touch with you. Please call us as soon as possible."?) Did it imply that Thp or Espoc needed help?

Did Espoc do anything that we need to concern ourselves with? Is he the one who called? went to? the embassy?

Was the disaster with the straightening tongs that the ones you had with you stopped working, so you were without tongs?

YES this is pretty much it and certainly good enough for a.....

*********************SPOILER*********************
I have just recently come come from overseas and travelling the world for the past year. I spent my first week in Tokyo but due the difference in the electrical/voltage system out there, none of my electrical products such as my hairdryer or straightners would work. Being a very hot and humid city and with me having naturally quite wavy hair, this was not a good combination to be without a set of straightners and did not relsih spending the week looking like a female Worzel Gummage! Frustrated at this I emailed my parents (Espoc and Thp) to vent my annoyance. Unfortunately emails from Japan have a habit of disappearing somewhere in the Cosmos between the country and the UK! I sent the email and thought nothing of it until I received a message from the hotel staff about 1am on my return to say that My Mum had called and was to phone her urgently and because she couldn't get hold of me, she had rung the British Embassy who also left a meaage asking me to call my Mum. It would appear that either my Mum had failed to ask what was wrong or had done so but the hotel didn't take the message properly. Either way, I immediately assumed something had Happened to my father and panicked (severe jetlag also played a part). It took me about 25 minutes to try and get a call through to the UK only to discover we were all panicking for nothing!! Still, at least we can laugh about it now.

Thanks everyone for sticking this one out and congrats to rabrab for finding the solution :-)
