I discovered this place recently and I quite like it. Now it is time for my first puzzle. The only information is the following:

Luckily he did not slap me in the face.

Would something bad happen if he slapped you?
me=human? adult? alive?

Or a llama, and if he slapped you you would spit on him

Is the danger beacuse it would hurt? or would someone be alerted by the noise? Is this in a place where slapping is in the custom of greeting or leaving?

Could he have slapped you somewhere other than the face and it be less bad?
would it be lucky for him he didn't slap you in the face? or lucky for you?
Did you say(? or do?) something which would make him angry enough to slap you in the face?

So you said something, correct? But not something which would normally make him angry? Was there some misinterpretation involved? Misinterpretagtion of what you said to him? Or of the situation you saw which led you to say something to him?

Was what you said something which would normally seem innocuous?
If you had said this to another person, would they have reacted less angrily?
If you had said this to the same person but under different circumstances, would the reaction have been significantly different?
Is the relationship between you and him relevant?
Partners / husband & wife?
Family?
Friends?
Enemies?
Colleagues?
Strangers?
Older person speaking to younger? Younger to older?
Different nationalities (if relevant)?

Did you meet him in person?
Is or was the intention that you wouldn't be strangers after the meeting (I'm thinking about the usual embarrassing scenes of going on a blind date or meeting your potential in-laws for the first time)
(although presumably not both of the above at the same time!)

If he had slapped you, would it have been done out of anger? out of friendliness? as a joke? as a ritual? any acting involved?
Why didn't he slap you--did he restrain himself? did he realise that a slap was inappropriate? Instead of slapping you, did he do something else? chastise you? hurt you in some other way?
Were both of you conversing in the same language? in his language? in yours? or a common language that you both knew?

Did he slap something else instead? eg the table, chair etc? Pat you on the back?
Was it lucky for you that he didn't slap you because he happened to be wearing large rings on his fingers which could cause more damage than intended?

Were the two of you outdoors? at a park? beach? waiting for a bus? at the zoo? or were you indoors? in a bar? shopping mall? airport? restaurant? bookstore? Was he from the service industry? waiter? bartender? shop attendant, etc?

Oh what did your "yesish to nope" refer to, then? I'm greedily looking for clues here :-) Please ignore this yesish to nope answer. I didn't understand that 'did he' refered to the pun. The question 'Did he?' isolated did not make any sense to me so I gave a vague answer. But there are no hidden clues. I don't think that you need clues anyway.

Anyway..
was it a typical American dish? English? French? German? Italian? Other?
Was the word with the dual meaning the food itself, or was it a description, eg smoked, marinated etc?

Only a part of the dish is relevant (the word with the dual meaning). This is eaten in most parts of the world. The dish by the way is typical for none of the cited countries but this is not really relevant.

was the word for bread mispronounced?
like in french: pain? that's it!

----------------SPOILER--------------------

This happened to me in San Francisco in a self service restaurant. Before, I had been speaking english, french and german in turn with three colleagues. I wanted to order something like falafel with bread. So I said to the man behind the counter "I would like falafel with some pain". I was using the french word for bread pronouncing it in the english way. Luckily he asked again giving me the occasion to reconsider my order.

Thank's to everyone for playing.
A bientôt!
