Did the fire service destroy the plants by driving their truck over them? by uprooting them in some way? (to make a firebreak?) by crushing them in some way?

Are the plants rare - due to numbers?
due to climate they need?
due to timings of flowering?

Are these plants that only occur after a fire?

"...nearly destroy a collection of rare plants" - does this mean...
A collection of plants came close to being destroyed, but in fact were unharmed?
or
A collection of plants were badly damaged, almost to the point of destruction?
or
Some members of a collection of plants were destroyed, but not all of them?

(Hi everyone, it's been a long time since my last visit)

If the firemen had put out the fire sooner, then the plants would have been destroyed, because they would not sprout?

Were there seeds (of this type of plant) at the place where the fire started?

Were the firemen aware of any plants in the area of fire?

Is it relevant what caught on fire?

Did the fire occur in a botanical garden/some scientific lab?

Did the firemen use water to put out the fire? Foam? Something else? Relevant?

Were those water plants? Orchids? Trees? Seeds of a plant? Algae?

Was it a forest fire?

Did the firemen use firetrucks, helicopters, bulldozers, any other machinery?

Is there something important about the trees we need to find out? Some peculiarity?

OK, the trees are members of an endangered species, right?

The seeds of these trees only germinate after they've gone through a fire, right?

Did the firefighters attempt to put out the fire before it got to this stand of trees?

Were they informed by someone else that they should let it burn, instead? If so, is the person? group? agency? who informed them relevant.

If not, did one? or more? of the firefighers recognize the endangered-species trees, and realize that they should let the fire burn that area?

Did the fire, in fact, burn through the area the endangered-species trees were?

Well Done.

*** SPOILER ***

The rare plants were giant sequoia trees (redwoods) – the largest living things on the planet. For many years the fire service put out forest fires thinking that by doing so they protected the trees. But sequoias need forest fires to help regenerate. Their thick bark is fire resistant, the fires burn back other plants and the sequoia needs the heat of fire to drop its seeds. Now small fires are allowed and managed in sequoia forests to allow growth.
