Do you believe it would be possible to build up a library of standard boring rulebreaker questions which would be of any use generally and independently of the cultural environment in which the rulebreaker riddle was invented and posed? Did the quick brown fox jump over the lazy dog? a? b? c? d? e? f? g? h? And similarly for the rest? aa? aaa? aaaa? aaaaa? Would I see any pattern if I continued, for eternity, this row of questions consisting of one or more 'a's??? ab? ba? ca? ac? One? Two step? Three little pigs? Four times Al Gore? Five stupid irrelevant unimaginative words? |

FA" FA isn't the same as CA, right? Absolutely right! FA is a false assumption, whereas the latter would be in the case in which it would not be possible for me to answer. OK, here's one theory, which I will now put to test. Perhaps there will not be any CA's before there have been some number of posts without italics in them. I will now post 15 posts without italics. |

Perhaps this attempt at getting off 10 CA's in a row will work out? I was running and jumping today, right? The dying man was old, wasn't he? Was there ever a way of playing poker which was totally unhazardous to your economy? Will was trying to concentrate, wasn't he? Is wanting to work worse than having to? Are these events worth knowing of? Did he have a plan in the making? Mani was just figuring out the puzzle's answer, when terror struck, wasn't he? "It is useful to let-lie-before-us and so the taking-to-heart also : beings in being." [(the weird philosopher) Heidegger's translation of Parmenides dictum "One should both say and think that being is."] If I get around 8 or 9 CA's on the above, then I have a guess at the rule. My conception of it is somewhat vague at the moment, but it basically involves the following: Criterium nr I for an unanswerable question: There should be a verb in the progressive tense in it. A thing to note here is that sentences like "What do you do for a living?", "Did you see a blossoming tree?" the words "living" and "blossoming" are used in nounal and adjectival senses, respectively. Hence those sentences don't fulfill Criterium nr I. This difference can be tricky sometimes, though. Criterium nr II for an unanswerable question: Split the question into syntactical parts such as subject, predicate, object, and perhaps somewhat further into various attributes, subclauses etcetera. (Let's call the whatever "undivisible" sentence bits that the sentence gets split into "the basic syntactical chunks".) Then check the verb(s) in progressive tense which you found while testing Criterium I. If it (or, if there are several, then at least one of them) falls into a "basic syntactical chunk" which contains at least one other word apart from the progressive tense verb itself, then Criterium II is fulfilled, and you've got a CA. Have I been wanting to write? |

What's the point in behaving chevaleresquely, these days? So panhandling the nostril is not an option? There was some heavy petting going on in there, right? So, you say my constant beat-boxing has annoyed you, lately? Has the puzzle been solved, in a manner of speaking? Did our finding out the answer take longer than you expected? Is panicking good for you? And there was much rejoicing, wasn't there? ... and so on. Is the rule simply that those questions which cannot be answered have a, what shall I say, "nounal participle" in them? I don't know if that's the actual grammatical term. I wonder what the hint has to do with all this, though: It Can Be An ODD Life? It Can Be AnOTher DeDerOLi? It Can Be AnOInT Dem Dere OL'? |

Oh, perhaps it was just a hint from you that my sentence (No hard feelings... I'm hosting a rule breaker myself, you know... I'm just trying to find out whether asking a disestablishmentarianistic question would bring me closer to the answer... ) (which was asked in italics) would have gotten a CA if it hadn't been in italics (due to the nounal phrase "asking a disestablishmentarianistic question") |

OK, I think this is good enough for a ***********************SPOILER*************************** I answer questions with the most appropriate yes-or-no-style answer, except in one case: I cannot answer questions that have "easily discernible" "-ing" gerunds (In linguistics, a gerund is a kind of verbal noun that exists in some languages. In today's English, it can behave as a verb within a clause (so that, for example, it may be modified by an adverb or have an object), but the clause as a whole (sometimes consisting only of one word, the gerund) acts as a noun within the larger sentence). |
