He = Human? Male? Adult?
The stones = metaphorical? Or real rocks?
Did he use the stones to do something?
How would he die if his life wasn't saved? By accident? Murder?

Did Tommy did something against the rules of some club, gang, etc. no
Did Tommy offend someone? no
Tommy did something illegal.

As for the killer, was he a vigilante? No, in my point of view the would-be killer did not take enforcement of law or moral code into his own hands.
Was the killer a human? the would-be killer was human

Questions about ethics are often subjective and thus hard to answer. I would suggest to focus on some more 'standard opening questions' now. Doing this you will soon meet with the 'ethical context' of the puzzle.

Would you or likely have done the same thing? Hard to put myself in his place, the times are changing. I think I would have anticipated the danger.

And PLEASE ask more about the location it is essential for the puzzle.

Was he walking near the wall, absentmindedly?Risking being killed by the guards?
And did he start hearing the Stones somewhere which attracted him away from danger?
Or listening to the Stones, but when the music stopped he could hear the guards?

Was he in East Berlin?
I can't remember - is this a true story?

Were his enemies the police?

Apart from the activity of our hero, was this an ordinary day or did something unusual / special happen?

Do we need to find out more about:
the background / personality our man?
about what is happening generally in the location in Berlin?
the specific location in Berlin?

Plebeian:
Was he walking near the wall, yes absentmindedly?yesish
Risking being killed by the guards? yes
And did he start hearing the Stones somewhere which attracted him away from danger? no
Or listening to the Stones, but when the music stopped he could hear the guards? no
It is a fact that he listened to the Stones but it is not this circumstance that saved his life.

Beroean:
Was he in East Berlin? yes
I can't remember - is this a true story? No, but I did not make it up myself, so explore.

Were his enemies the police? As Pleian found out, his 'enemies' were the guards (or Border Patrol). In the German Democratic Republic they were part of the army.

Apart from the activity of our hero, was this an ordinary day or did something unusual / special happen? Actually, there was something special happening at the wall this day. But you needn't find out this to solve the puzzle.

Do we need to find out more about:
the background / personality our man? yes
about what is happening generally in the location in Berlin? noish
I suggest to find out more about the relation beween:
the boy - the Rolling Stones - the German Democratic Republic

the specific location in Berlin? No, it is sufficient to know that it happened near the Wall.

Where were the Stones played? From GDR, or from Federal Republic of Germany? Yes, in the GDR but not from the GDR authorities. Possibly also by radio from FRG but not relevant.
Did it happen during the Berlin Wall destruction? No, before in the 70s

No, it has been established that he did not climb the Wall. In fact he did not go nearer than about 20 m.

Recap:
This story did not really happen but it takes place in East Berlin in the 1970s. Tommy (say 15 years old), a keen Rolling Stones fan, does something semi-legal and gets into a mixup on the street near the Wall. He does not try to escape, he doesn't even go nearer than about 20 m to the Wall but a man from the Border Patrol nearly kills him. This kind of accident happens because both the man and the boy are careless. It is important to know that the music of the Stones was banned in the German Democratic Republic.

None of the Stones members is envolved and no particular song of theirs is relevant.

So how did the Stones safe his life?

Did the guards know he had listened to the Stones' music?
Did he listen to the song before this incident? during?
Was he with others at the time? A gang? Any fighting going on?
Did the Border Patrol man think he was going to climb over the wall? Did he actually fire? (but missed?) or did he almost fire, then changed his mind?

Did the guards know he had listened to the Stones' music? probably not
Did he listen to the song before this incident? during? Which song? He surely listened to the Stones before and after the incident but not during.
He listened to the Stones because he was a fan, the latter fact is more important.

Was he with others at the time? A gang? Any fighting going on? no to these
Did the Border Patrol man think he was going to climb over the wall? probably
Did he actually fire? yes and relevant
(but missed? yope, define miss)
or did he almost fire, then changed his mind? so no

A [pack of] black market LP record[s] (in his backpack)? Yes, one (double) album bought on the black market.
That's the most important part.

Some additional questions (let's be fair to the others):
What was he doing (nothing extraordinary) while s.o. shot at him and why?
What is the name of the album?
What did he feel after the bullet did not hit him?

Maybe he was acting suspiciously, from his perspective merely because he didn't want the album discovered, but from the guard's point of view it could have looked like concealing or drawing a weapon?

Presumably he actually felt bad after the bullet hit him, despite the fact that it saved his life the album obviously gave its life to protect him?

"Exile on Main Street"? This one, on the 2nd try!

Plebeian:

-----------------SPOILER-----------------

I took this puzzle from the film "Sonnenallee" (which is based on a book). It takes place in East Berlin in the 1970s. A subplot is about a teenager saving his money to buy "Exile on Main St." from "The Rolling Stones" (this music was banned in the German Democratic Republic). Late in the evening, after buying the record from a dealer he gets into a mixup at the wall. He runs away as he doesn't want to be stopped by the Border Patrol but they shoot at him. The bullet is stopped by the record he is hiding under his jacket. The Stones save his life however the boy is terribly unhappy that his precious record is broken.
In fact, the Stones jeopardised also his life in the first place but I did not give this piece of information. Mick an Keith who might be reading this would have been upset...

Thanks to the numerous players who found out parts of the puzzle and especially to those who were sticking to it.
Until next time!
