Did the third party detect the lighter in some way even though it was not visible? If he had not had the lighter, would the third party have acted in the same way? I guess what I'm getting at is did the presence of the lighter trigger the event(s) which resulted in his death? Or was it more that the event would've happened anyhow and if the lighter hadn't been there he might've survived it? |

NO If he had not had the lighter, would the third party have acted in the same way? yes I guess what I'm getting at is did the presence of the lighter trigger the event(s) which resulted in his death? Or was it more that the event would've happened anyhow and if the lighter hadn't been there he might've survived it?ok, a certain "event" happened that would have happened whether or not he had the lighter, and this "event" was brought about by an earlier "event" that also would have happened whether or not he had the lighter. Because he had the lighter, though, this second "event" caused the explosion that lead to his death. He almost certainly would not have died if he had not had the lighter. |

Ok, so Bob died because he was a smoker, but not in the way people expected. He got into a fight in a bar and the police officer called in to deal with the situation was unable to subdue him physically herself, so she attempted to use the (usually) non-lethal taser. Unfortunately, at least one of the taser prongs hit the disposable lighter in Bob's pocket, causing it to explode and killing him. Is that pretty close? |

Unfortunately, at least one of the taser prongs hit the disposable lighter in Bob's pocket, causing it to explode and killing him. Is that pretty close?you got it! ********SPOILER*************** This is based on the true story of one Dennis Crough, aged 53, from Daytona Beach Florida, who was subdued by a female police officer after attacking someone with a knife. The taser hit the lighter in his shirt pocket, causing it to explode and set his upper body on fire. Dennis's burns did not kill him, but in my imaginary scenario, after a bar fight which would likely leave our Bob with some alcohol on his clothes, the outcome was much worse. Good job Bodo for wrapping that one up so quickly! Feel free to jump in on my other puzzles, and I will post a new one soon! |

Soapbox time--there has been some controversy over the use of tasers because there have been occasions in which they have proven to be more lethal than intended. Usually this is because the person being subdued is under the influence of something and also refuses to cooperate. This has led to calls for banning their use, which I truly don't understand: if you don't want the police killing people with tasers should they instead shoot them with their guns? Or bludgeon them into a coma? |

I saw a pretty hideous picture while reading about tasers (to make sure I had all my info straight for this puzzle), of a guy who had been hit with a taser dart in his eye. Pretty ghastly injury, but I'd venture to say a bullet would be quite a bit worse. |
