They suspected, but they couldn't get at him. They pushed a button, and then they could. |

Is this the kind of situation when you can't prove a murder because there is no dead body? The murder hides the body somewhere? And then you call the mobile phone of the victim and find it in the wall or under the floor? |

Does this have to do with constitutional limitations of what methods the police can use? Did they need a warrant? To do a house search? of the victim's house? of the murderer's house? So they called the victim. Did the victim answer? My guess is that he/she didn't since he/she had joined the choir invisible, and gone to meet his maker. Did someone else answer? So, perhaps they called the victim several times? During a week or so? Did they have the body or didn't they? Did they know for sure that the victim was missing? And by calling the victim, they got information which made the court think that a house search was OK? Was the murderer imposturing as the victim? But he didn't use the same phone, or something? Or perhaps the murderer answered both his own number and the victim's number? And they saw him doing this? |

Did the victim answer? Its kinda hard t answer when you are dead! My guess is that he/she didn't since he/she had joined the choir invisible, and gone to meet his maker. Did someone else answer?no one else did, and your guess was incorrect So, perhaps they called the victim several times? During a week or so? Did they have a warrant before they called the numbers? Did they get a warrant after they called the numbers? Did they hear the ring tone of the victim's phone? Was the place, in which the victim's phone was, somewhat unusal? The place they needed to search: did they ever search this place? Was the body of the victim in that place? Size/length of this place: 1m? 2m? 3m? ... 10m? ... 20m? .... 100m? ... 1000m? ... 500 billion light years? Was it a vehicle? A car? The luggage space of a car? A coffin? Something box-like? Some part of a building? Maybe after they called the numbers, they didn't need a warrant anymore? Because they had some evidence anyway? Was the victim's body ever found? |

The murderer said he did not know the victim or something like that? They didn't believe him but didn't get the warrant to search inside his car? So they called the victim's phone, it rang inside the trunk of the car and so it was proved that the murderer lied? |

Actually, you are too close so let's.... SPOILER!!! At a toll booth, some security guards suspected that the trunk contained a body. They couldn't get it, because any item gotten without a warrant is not admissable in court. They called the cell phone of the victim, and when it started ringing, they told the murderer to take his cell phone out of the trunk in case if he got an important call. The rest is , as they say, history |
