Ah Nimue, we meet again. Good puzzles, by the way.

Is Adrianna sane?
Healthy?
Is she trying to avoid trouble? If so:
- Legal or
- Physical?

In this sitation would a plagiarist be in a better position than the author of the original?
Is this true for anyone (or just for Adrianna)?

Does she claim to have plagiarized a particular piece of work? or to be a plagiarist in general?
if the first one: does the (alleged) original work actually exist? does the (alleged) plagiate actually exist?
Does she claim to have plagiarized something? to plagiarize regularly? to intend to plagiarize something in the future?
Does she claim to be a plagiarist before the (supposed) author of the original? in order to flatter him?
Does she benefit in any way by claiming to be a plagiarist? if so: financially?
income tax or wealth tax relevant?
Is the type of work relevant? if so: literature? painting? music? engineering? science?

Was she trying to help someone out?
Was she ashamed to have written the original?
Did some event occur that made it so that she wanted to pretend to be a plagiarist? If so, to her? To someone else?

Is the piece of work well-known?
Did something in it prove to be false?
Would it have made her look bad if people had known she wrote the original? Made someone else look bad?

The event that occurred:
Did it happen to a friend of hers?
Did it happen to the person who claims to write the original?
Was it related to what's in the writing?

Is the writing a book? novel? non-fiction? magazine? school paper? work paper?

Does it matter who she gives credit to? Or is just important that she convinces her she didn't write it?

In this situation, is plagiarism more to copy the whole thing word for word or to copy or be inspired by a certain part?
Is it worth exploring the situation about a third person? How they are related?

Is this in an academic setting? is she pretending about a piece of coursework? something that is assessed? Is there one particular third person she pretends to? is it her tutor? a teacher of some sort? an examiner? a friend? another student? is she a student?

does she hope to gain a benefit? for herself? for someone else? avoid losing a benefit? for herself? for someone else?

is money involved? pride? her safety?

does she want to get some one else in trouble?

is she doing this to hide something even worse that she has done? is any crime involved?

are her politics relevant? her hobbies? her race? her religion? her romantic relationships? her family? her job? her place of residence?

is she mistaken in something?

does she pretend on only one occasion? several? many?

is she trying to spare someone's feelings? make someone else look good? cause someone else trouble?

Is she doing something more, such as claiming that she also got away with it?

Is she telling the other person up front that she plagiarised the work and got away with it? If so, is she trying to find out what would happen to a plagiarist? Is she asking on behalf of someone else?

Is she aiming to win a competition, or a scholarship of some sort? Is she hoping that other students will plagiarise? Do other students actually plagiarise in this scenario?

Is this done between classes? during a classroom session? competition?
Does anyone else hear what they are talking about? If so, other students? other teachers?
Does this happen in a one-on-one or more public setting? Does it matter?
Does the answer from the teacher help her make up her mind about what to do next? understand what happened before? understand something about this teacher? understand something about the school? about herself?
Is she comparing the answer/reaction she got with what actually happened to someone else?
Is she secretly recording or broadcasting the conversation?

Is she trying to make money out of this? If so, is it by selling this work? Other works too? Offering to help the other person to plagiarise in such a way that you get away with it?
Is she trying to make it sound like it is easy to get away with plagiarising? If so, only for her? for any student at this school? from a particular teacher?

Is Adrianna a social psychology student? Is she experimenting to find out how the other person will react? Whether she/he will report Adrianna? Is the other person one among many to whom Adrianna tells this story?

Would this work if the other person did not know Adrianna? Do they know each other? well?
In this case, is the position more important than who actually has got the position? or is it the combination of person and position?
Due to the position of the other person, is she trying to find out if the other person:
- lives what he/her preach
- lives up to the responsibility and moral standards of the position
- is as clever or stupid as the stereotype of that position
- will advice her to turn herself in
- will react up front or use the knowledge behind her back?
- has changed since he/her got the position
- is the correct person for the job?

*********** SPOILER *******
Adriana did something I thought about doing as an undergradaute, but was never brave enough to do. Wondering just what was behind the student health services' promise of confidentiality unless community welfare is endangered (or whatever--I'm not sure how they word it), she first protected herself by telling one of her professors she was going to go to a health services counselor & say she felt guilty about plagiarizing in that course & wanted help overcoming her gukit. Her motives could be either altruistic--to protect other students from psychiatric spies masquerdaing as helpers--or self-interested--to make her reputation as an investigative reporter--or (most likely) a mixture. By the way, when I mention this situation, almost everyone things it's obvious what the counselor would do--but some say it's obvious that the counselor would not tell & others say it's obvious that he would.l What I think is obvious is that if you want counseling, you should go to an independent counselor, rather than to a double agent hired by your school or employer. Suppose you went to a college counselor because you were having trouble "adjusting" to dorm life? How free would he be to suggest that the real problem was the university's expectation that you should be willing to share a small room with a stranger & a bnathroom with 20 strangers? Whatever your views on this, please check out my new puzzle at the bottom on the page!!
