Was Dave's reply a direct answer to Mary's question? or did he answer along the lines of "I don't know, but I'll find out..."? Were there others in the room? Relevant? Did Dave apologize to Mary? Is the content of Mary's question relevant to the puzzle? Is Mary's relationship to Dave relevant? Jobs relevant? Location relevant? Era relevant? |

Did Mary ask Dave to go and fetch something? Did she ask his opinion on something? Did she ask him for factual information? If so, could she have found out this information via, say, Google or Wikipedia? Did he answer truthfully? Or did he lie? Or did he answer in error? Does he apologise: for misleading her? for hurting her emotionally? for being rude? Is the room about the same size as a normal double bedroom? Larger? Smaller? Is it an office? Are they co-workers? |

Did Mary ask Dave to perform a task for her? Did she ask him a yes/no question? was it a lateral puzzle? Did Mary ask "can", "may", "could", "should", or other similar type of question? Is knowing that there are other people in the room relevant to the puzzle because it provides clue to where they are and what they are doing there? Are they waiting for their turn for someone in the office to attend to them? |

if I knew how to do a smiley, I'd put one right here...guess I'll have to look that up later I guess Dave was insulted by the question? Is "leg" part of a common-day phrase or an idiom, which Dave mistook for an insult directed at him? I think you already said that Mary's question is NOT a routine question that she would ask of people needing her service, so is there any specific reason she would ask this question to Dave? did she ask if he had hurt his leg? that will do for... or had a bad leg? or a dead leg? ***************Spoiler************* I did warn you that your answers were far funnier than the actual event but here goes. This situation happened when I was a young Bank Teller (excuse the awful pun in the puzzle title) Mary had just finished serving a customer at her Teller station when Dave without being asked approached the counter (which was about 3 feet high and therefore only afforded a waist up view of the customer). Mary looked up just in time to see Dave leaning a pair of crutches against the counter. Mary being a very caring soul politely said "you poor thing did you hurt your leg?" . You can imagine her horror when Dave stepped back from the counter to reveal the missing limb. The printable version of his response would have been "Are you having a laugh?" afterwhich he stormed (well as close to storming as a one legged man can) out of the bank. Dave obviously realised what had happened and that he had overreacted and returned a little while later to apologise to Mary. A funny little PS to this tale is that when Mary had composed herself enough to call her next customer forward a guy with only one arm approached the counter. Needless to say Mary declined to comment! Thanks to all for playing and for your witty answers . I'm putting my best foot forward and will set a new puzzle today |
