There is a man who, every time he sees me, excitedly starts asking me questions about someone I know almost nothing about. Why? |

This sounds like a little lady in a shop in the US in 1994 who kept asking me about Prince Charles and Diana as if I was an expert on their goings on, just because she heard my British accent. Anything similar to this? |

Is he aware that you don't know much about the person he asks about? Is he senile? Does he expect an answer from you? Is there anything relevant about this man? If so; age? background? job? education? sivil status? where he lives? hobbies? Would it be helpful for us to try to determine who the person he asks questions about is? |

So we're looking for a male musician from Western Europe who spent his later years in America? Schoenberg? Varese? And this is your name as well? (I promise I won't peek.) Is there any other reason your questioner gets excited, apart from the similarity of name? (For instance, I have the same surname as a nineteenth-century playwright but nobody keeps asking me about him: there must be some other reason?) |

The more we find out, the less we know. So he is an academic who specialises in Kreisler? Has he published on Kreisler? Is this relevant? Do we need to find out specifically what questions he asks you? Are the questions welcome or do you rather wish he would leave you alone? Is he just being friendly? Does he want to borrow some family heirloom or such? Does anyone in your family own a Kreisler violin? Does he want to access recordings? Sketches? Other documents? So what do we still need to find out? The exact thing he asks you to find out? And why you don't find out? Anything else? Basically you need to find out what questions he's asking me, why he is so persistent, and why I don't either find out or tell him that I don't intend to |

Could you find out, if you wanted to? Would it be easy for you to find out? Is it something that only a relative (such as you) would know? Is there a reason why he can't just find out? Because he isn't a relative? Does he need the information or is he just interested to know it? Would he be angry if you told him you weren't going to find out? |

Just for clarification/personal recap. This man asks you something about the composer Kreisler, of whom you are a descendant. His job is as a teacher of music, and he specializes in this composer. Yet there is a reason why he cannot find out about the thing he's asking you himself, but this reason is not a disability, old age or reduced mobility. You on the other hand do not want to find out as it's too much work, but you do not want to tell him either for some (yet to be determined) reason. What puzzles me is that even though he is the expert and should have the contacts, resources, etc to do it, he thinks (knows?) that you will be able to find information he cannot find? |

Is it relevant whether you like or dislike Kreisler's music? Would the puzzle apply only to his compositions, or to his recordings and arrangements as well? Is he interested in your musical talents? Does he wish to find out whether you have inherited any particular musical talent from Kreisler? Are you a musician, and is this relevant? So a quick recap: You are a descendant of Fritz Kreisler. This music lecturer, a lover of Kreisler's music, asks you something about your opinion of Kreisler. You say you will listen to the relevant piece(s) and report back to him. You don't, because you haven't got round to it and feel quite indifferent about Kreisler's music anyway. But you tell him you will, so as not to offend him. Is this all correct? So all we need to find out is what aspect/quality of Kreisler's music you are promising him to listen to/for? Is this right? Will finding out the information actually enhance his listening pleasure? Will it enhance his knowledge of Kreisler? Or will it just give him pleasure to know that you share his love of Kreisler? *bashes head against wall* |

Does he just ask you which is your favourite Kreisler piece?YES!!!! Whew! Finally time for.... **************SPOILER******************** I work at a restaurant across the street from the school of music at the University of Georgia. One of my regular customers is a music professor, and one day when he saw my name tag he said "you know, in my field, you have a very famous name..." and I told him that Fritz Kreisler was something to the effect of my great grandfathers 1st cousin, but I wasn't sure. He proceeded to ask me whether I liked his music, and when I told him I really didn't know, he couldn't believe it! He told me how wonderful it was and that I really should give it a listen, that I would love it, that I, being his family, might even have a special affinity for it. I told him that "yeah, maybe you're right, I may have to listen to some of it." Since then, every time he comes in, he floods me with a series of questions with hardly a break for me to answer..."Have you listened to any Kreisler yet? Isn't it fantastic? What's your favorite piece? Have you found any recordings in your families records? Have you found out the exact relationship between you and him?...." All I can ever say is, no I haven't listened to any of it yet. I don't have the heart to tell him that I never intend to go out of my way to listen to the music, because the idea of a member of a Kreisler family not caring about good ol Fritz that much would really let him down...and I'm all about making the customer happy!" Thanks everyone for sticking with it for so long, I know this one was driving Eli and Woodworm nuts. Thanks to Enjay for giving it that last minute push! |

Ah, at last! Phew indeed. I'm not a fan of Fritz's compositions but his playing was absolutely unique. Next time he asks, perhaps tell him your favourite piece is Kreisler's version of "Danny Boy". It must be the kitschest and schmaltziest piece in the whole world. He plays it in three octaves. That might get the Prof off your case for a bit. |
