By ligthing that cigar did you then NOT do something else that would have cost £500? Did you smoke the cigar or just lit it? If you smoked it, would you still have saved the money if you had just lit it?

Is it relevant;
where this happens?
if you're a regular smoker or not?
whether anyone else was present?
what type of cigar you lit?

whether anyone else was present? yes

Does it matter what time of day it was?

When it comes to where it happens, do we have to find a geographical location, like a country? state? city? or more specific, like a park? building? other?

Was anyone else present when you smoked the cigar? If so, relevant how many? and are there anything special about these people?

And just to clarify, did you SAVE the money or EARN the money?

Did either persons present object to or was annoyed by your cigar smoking? Did either of them appreciate your cigar smoking? Were you in a store? Was this a private sale?

Would the item's size give us any hints? Is the item of purchase bigger than a car? huggable size like one of those big teddy bears? two-hander size like a football? single-hander size that fits in the palm of your hand?

Is it a tangible item?

Is it bigger than a tv? yes bigger than a sofa? somewhat bigger but hard to quantify bigger than a double bed? this is closest to the size of it

should we also try to determine what it is, not only how big it is? yes what it is is very relevant to how i saved the money but i suppose this is solvable without guessing the exact nature of the item. The item's size is also relevant but maybe you should concentrate on the circumstances of my smoking the cigar which will solve it quicker for you i feel

When you lit the cigar did you then see something you woulnd't have seen if you hadn't lit it?

Did you offer someone a cigar? did you offer light to someone else's cigar/cigarette?

Just one thought - where you actually allowed to smoke in the location where you lit the cigar?

I suppose it's fair to say that had he been concentrating a bit more he would not have made the error however my smoking did not cause him to lose concentration.

You said you were negotiating price. Is geographical area relevant here? Are you in a country where you must haggle? Or are you discussing a discount? I actually said we weren't negotiating but the price of the item had yet to be determined. This determination would not involve negotiation or haggling

Is it a case where he doesn't know the price and have to ask someone else? If so, does he then make a mistake regarding name of the object?

Were you trading something in, in part exchange?
Was the item you were buying fully finished and ready to take away? Did you actually take it with you? Was it delivered? Were you at home and it was being delivered at the time? Is your wife's presence relevant? Did she say something? do something which affected the outcome? Did the item get a little damaged? Did the other person get smoke in his eyes?

Does the price vary because
currency exchange rates are involved?
different types of insurance are offered?
there is sales tax?
price is different for residents and non-residents?

So he weighed the object at the point in time it was sold and the scales showed the weight to be lighter than it really was. Right?

Did someone put pressure from underneath the scales?

Hmmm, just a thought. You said he was distracted by something. Did he put the object on the scales? Looked away because he was distracted? and someone (your wife?) removed something from the object thinking it was already weighed and thus made the object lighter?

Wow Enjay that's some first post. You basically have the premise of the story but with some small detail omitted but certainly close enough to declare a

*************SPOILER***************

My wife and I were buying a wrought iron side gate for our house. The company who made it did not deliver so you had to collect the gate yourself. They charged for the gate by weight. Their system involved your driving your car or van into their factory/workshop and going over a weighbridge which obviously calculated the weight of you vehicle and occupants. We collected the gate and loaded it into our trailer and proceeded back to the weighbridge. There were a few vehicles ahead of us so we were stationary for 5 or 10 minutes. Getting bored i decided to have a smoke. Now my wife detests my cigar smoking so i stepped out of the car and lit up. While enjoying my smoke my wife drove the car and trailer onto the weighbridge where the new weight was recorded. I then approached the booth and settled the bill. I was impressed at the value for money i had received as wrought iron is an expensive commodity ( In Ireland anyway) . It was only when discussing the value i'd received with a neighbour who had bought a similar gate at the same place did i begin to realise that a mistake had been made. It was much later when i realised that that i was ommited from the second weighing because i was outside the car smoking. Calulating the weight of the gate and subtracting my own weifht i was able to ascertain that i had saved 500 on the deal. Hope this makes sense. Thanks to all who played this especially Eli,Damia Rufus & Sunshine. This was my most active puzzle so far and i was hoping to get to 100 posts but never mind.

By the way please don't ask if i went back to the gate people and paid them the money. I wouldn't want to lower your opinion of me
