Do you actually commit the crime? Have you ever committed the crime? Is it a petty crime? Or a serious crime? Is he (assuming this mate is a he) actually joking? Is there a play on words involved? Does it happen at a regular time each week? On a certain day of the week? If so, does it happen on a M? Tu? W? Th? F? Sa? Su? Does he ask you this face to face? On the telephone? Online? Or does it vary? Is football relevant? Downloading of music relevant? |

Does the crime involves harming another person? Harming an animal? Murder? Criminal damage? Theft? Robbery? Burglary? Terrorism? Breaking airport security rules? Is it something like saying "I've got a bomb" at an airport? Is it the sort of crime that could get you a life sentence / the death penalty? Just knowing how he asks you to commit the crime, would I understand why he says it? Or is it more of an in-joke that needs background information? Is where he says it relevant? Where you are when he says it? |

Does he directly ask you to commit the crime? Or does it just so happen that, by following his request, you'd commit it? As well as criminal damage, would trespassing be involved? Breaching the peace? Is "painting the town red" relevant? You said that an activity that you do causes him to send the SMS. Can anyone do this activity? By themselves? Do you need any props? Can this activity be safely done at home? at work? whilst driving a car? on the bus? on the streets? |

Does he directly ask you to commit the crime? inadvertently yes Or does it just so happen that, by following his request, you'd commit it? see above but remember he doesn't actually want me to commit a crime As well as criminal damage, would trespassing be involved? probably Breaching the peace? most definately Is "painting the town red" relevant? element of this but not that specific phrase You said that an activity that you do causes him to send the SMS. Can anyone do this activity? no not everybody By themselves? you can but it's not as enjoyable Do you need any props? Yope. This is something that we do regularly together. In hindsight activity is not an ideal word to describe it Can this activity be safely done at home? yes but that's not where we do it at work? no whilst driving a car? no on the bus? physically could be done but shouldn't be on the streets? see the bus answer |

Does the thing he says refer to the specific activity you do? Or something more general? (eg painting the town red would refer to just having fun generally) Is your activity to do with eating or drinking? |

Does he realise that he asking you to do this? Would this puzzle still work if he said it to you face to face? If he talked to you on the phone? If he wrote you a letter? Or an email? Or is it something specifically to do with texting? |

If he talked to you on the phone? If he wrote you a letter? Or an email? Or is it something specifically to do with texting? only would work for texting so yes to this no to rest Oh, and is the activity just going out for a drink? yes Or is there more to it? no Relevant if you're drinking alcohol or a soft drink? it's relevant that alcohal is being consumed |

Is it only connected to what he writes in the text? For example, my phone displays the date and time of sent etc in each text message I get, anything like this relevant? |

You said that this could only work as a text message: so does it self-acknowledge as a text message? as being sent via mobile phone? Are we looking for a cliche/catchphrase that, taken literally, would constitute a crime? |

Is predictive text messaging relevant at all? (My mate once mistyped the word 'gorgeous' in a text to his fiancee, and ended up sending 'You looked insidious tonight'). Something along those lines? |

Does he mean to ask if you want to go have a pint, but because the predictive text messaging, he types "do you want to go have a riot?" that's perfect so *****************SPOILER**************** My friend Vincent has terrible trouble with predictive texting. He and I meet every tuesday evening after work for a pint and he always sends me a text message at about 3 pm confirming if i'll be there. For weeks he was sending me a text saying "Are we going for a riot this evening" before I had the heart to correct him. he now sends it this way as an ongoing joke. Another suggestion your phone makes for pint is shot which is more apt i think. Well done to Becca and Woodworm I knew this would go quickly |
