They = humans? Something to do with their profession? Did it fail because 'they' did not prepare enough or did someone/something interfere? |

Relevant what they tried to steal? from whom? and value of it? Oh, and is this a "dumb criminal" scenario? Or were they clever, just that something happened that was unlucky for them? |

Just a few more questions before I leave work. Did they use a weapon? If so, relevant what kid of weapon? relevant how many 'they' are? something about them that is relevant? Except for a possible weapon, are there any other relevant objects in this story? any relevant vehicles? Were they stopped before they came as far as actually stealing the money? during the raid? where they discovered later? any previous convictions relevant? Any of these relevant at all; location? era? time of day? whether post office was open or not? whether there were people on the premises? |

Well, I don't know this. Just had another, similar one a few years ago, also a post-office raid, but they were not stopped beforehand. However, one of the robbers left his registered mobile phone behind. Was the post office open? closed? The one item that was relevant; Is it made of wood? stone? leather? metal? fabric? is it liquid? gaseous? solid? |

So it's solid. Is it a brand new invention? has it been around for ages? if not been around for ages, is a fairly modern(-ish) thing, ie something that came after the industrial revolution? Is it something most people have in their house? at work? in car? is it found only in certain places (like shops, buses, parks, etc)? or is it a rare item? |

No, you didn't say it was an invention. I should probably have phrased it differently. So my next question then is; is it an invention? or a discovery? Was this item something the robbers brought with them? something that was in the post office already? |

I'm not sure if we have established... if the would-be robbers expected the post office to be open? or did they expect it to be closed? Is the other relevant object that was at the post office a mailbox? stamp dispenser? scale? garbage can? |

Would the post office usually be open at that hour? if not, is there a specific reason why the raiders thought it would be open? |

Were they relying on the post office being open, but when they arrived it was closed? Could they have known it would be closed or was it closed due to unforeseen circumstances? Is the object anything to do with why the postoffice was closed? Or how the robbers realised it was closed? Was it something that made it impossible for them to rob a closed post office? |

It's your puzzle - only you know whether a $poiler is necessary... But, from your last answer, I'll have a shot So, these wannabe-criminals decided to rob a post office. One of them remembered a particularly security-free one (or some other inane reason) in a neighbouring village, and so they decided to rob that one. They planned the heist for months, but unfortunately forgot to check that the post office in question was still open. It wasn't, and their plan failed. |

They planned the heist for months, but unfortunately forgot to check that the post office in question was still open. It wasn't, and their plan failed. That's exactly it!!! Here is the original text: Back in 1971, three thieves at Billericay in Essex England, gave many hours of thought to robbing the local post office in Mountnessing Road. Among the details that they discovered, were the times at which there was the most cash and when there were the least security guards on the premises. They also invested in masks, weapons and a getaway vehicle. These genius’left no stone unturned. At a pre-arranged time, the gang sped through the town and screeched to a halt outside the post office. It was only when they jumped out of the car and ran toward the building that they discovered the one detail that they had omitted to check. The post office had been closed for around twelve years.SPOILER! |
