So, words so far... Rabbi, pirate. Does that take care of the "Jewish seaman"? Good question: yes. The Rabbi IS the pirate. Unusual combination of jobs, but hey. Perhaps time for a *** RECAP *** A rabbi, who also happens to be a pirate, apparently sold a substance (probably a liquid but not a drink) to someone. Certain types of ships are also involved. The title is relevant, and this might be worth exploring a little more. Pronunication of words is also relevant. Try not to google from here on in. |

Allright - is the substance used for fuel? no is it partially made up of water? it might be entirely water? no no water? again, it might be this Is the substance's use important, or more the name of it? the puzzle hinges on the name of it rather than the use of it ... this being more of a verbal than a situational puzzle |

is the substance used as ammunition? it was stated that the substance was most likely a liquid, but it could possibly be a solid or a powder...does it come in various forms? is it usually a liquid but also can come in those other forms? or can the substance change into different forms through heat/chemicals/other? total guess--could it possibly be molten steel (a liquid) but when it is turned into a blade, it is a solid? |

So this particular substance is water soluble and can be transported as liquid ( or rather water-based solution ), a solid ( when all water is evaporated ), or as a powder? Rubber? By ship type do you mean type of construction or the current use of the vessel? Merchantman? |

Hmm...things that can be solid, liquid or powder.... drugs? no soap/detergent? no heh heh...detergent...does he want to deter or detour gentiles? Heheh ... no, but that sort of punny thinking is the right way to go is the ship a coaster? no. You don't need any more information about the ships Is the substance paint? no, but ... glue? no I have a feeling that the solution is going to be some kind of silly sentence, like "The pirate rabbi sells a subtance to people who use it", only it will be worded in a humorous way - is this the idea? Yes! Exactly this. And you have nearly all the important words of the puzzle. But nobody has come close to the overall idea, which would explain the title. Is the substance identified by a brand name, like Clorox? Or by category, like bleach? \b(this) Is it used by everyone? it is a component of many, many things By humans? yes By people of certain ethnicity? People in certain geographical areas? Children? Adults? Babies? none of these, though the idea of people of a certain ethnicity and in a certain area is not entirely irrelevant, in an entirely different way. |

Are we thinking about different ways to pronounce "dye"? Maybe pronounced "day"? (Did the rabbi pirate say to the merchants, "have a good dye," and it came out, "have a good day?" To which the merchants responded, "thanks, we will." And they were forced to buy the dye?) So, we are definitely focusing on the word "dye," right--no trying to figure out different types of dye (tie die, henna, varnish, etc), correct? And, the merchants did not ask the rabbi pirate to get the items, correct? Did he request that the merchants buy the substance? force them to buy the substance? was the rabbi pirate trying to get rid of the substance so he would not be caught with it? |

Are we thinking about different ways to pronounce "dye"? among other words, yes Maybe pronounced "day"? no (Did the rabbi pirate say to the merchants, "have a good dye," and it came out, "have a good day?" To which the merchants responded, "thanks, we will." And they were forced to buy the dye?) Hehe ... that would work for Australian sailors I suppose. It's completely wrong but the type of thinking is quite right So, we are definitely focusing on the word "dye," right--no trying to figure out different types of dye (tie die, henna, varnish, etc), correct? that's right, among other words And, the merchants did not ask the rabbi pirate to get the items, correct? they may well have done, but this is irrelevant I'm afraid Did he request that the merchants buy the substance? again irrel force them to buy the substance? again, irrel was the rabbi pirate trying to get rid of the substance so he would not be caught with it? no, nothing like this If the dye was traded "by request", was it "ordered"? it wasn't traded by request Is it relevant that "dye" and "rabbi" rhyme? hmmm .... VERY vaguely, I suppose Are mnemonics involved? no, but excellent thinking Is the word Pyrite relevant? as in Iron Pyrite or Fool's gold. all that glisters ... nope |

Is it an advertising slogan? or is it a random sentence that you have made up which can convey the jewish pirate scenario if pronounced differently? it's a veritable toe-curler, and if I'd made it up I would be ashamed: I certainly wouldn't share it with the world |

Pirates rob the ship but don't buy? not this Please forgive my total and utter ignorance of 80s music... LOL you are forgiven. It's not really my favourite era either I don't even know when this was written, but I remember that song with the guy singing "My israelites" and it sounds like "My ears are alight" (I think someone wrote a funny version of it with all the words changed) is this relevnt? very right thinking: this is not a deliberate parody of the song but ... (Just thinking Jews...Israelites...) VERY close, but wrong song. I think that one was in the late 60s. This one is early 80s, and equally famous. If you don't know it, you could probably work it out from here. The slight trick is that the original song doesn't use regular English syntax, hence the confusion ... |

No: a rather more serious and spiritual songwriter than any of those: think of a distinctive accent and non-standard English grammar So, we should think of mistaken lyrics Yes! Popularly misheard lyrics. I believe that the term for this is a "mondegreen", after someone mistook "And laid him on the green" for "And Lady Mondegreen". Darn I knew this was going to end up an 80's music puzzle. Is the singer actually english or is he not a native english speaker therefore his words are open to misinterpretation. |

I may have to watch from the sidelines from now on, as I know absolutely NO lyrics by Bob Marley. I'm sure that once they are revealed I'll recognize it, but nothing rings a bell at this point. Is the word "die" being misunderstood as "dye"? Or another word that sounds like "dye", especially with regards to trading? |

Is the word "die" being misunderstood as "dye"? Or another word that sounds like "dye", especially with regards to trading? the end of one word and the whole of another, taken together, sound like "dye" is the phrase "Rob I" in the middle, beginning, end of song lyric we are trying to figure out? "rob I" are the last two words of the first line: in Standard English this would be "rob me". You may just want to guess where the dye fits in, and then I'll spoyl. The pirate(s) and merchant ships are common to both the real and the misheard version. |

Fortunately I love Bob Marley. The song is Redemption Song and the relevant lines are : Old Pirates yes they Rob I Sold I to the Merchant Ships. Should have gotten that much quicker. Great puzzle Woodworm I guess my next puzzle will be have to be an 80's one. |

*** SPOILER *** See Peter's perfect answer above. The popular mishearing is: Well, the pirate's just a rabbi Sold dye to the merchant ships. It sounds very similar, especially in Bob Marley's Jamaican creole. In fact, mishearing it as "rabbi" is so common that there is apparently even a Jewish club somewhere in the US where everyone sings the rabbi version. I don't think I'll be able to hear the song again without thinking of rabbis. Congrats Peter for getting the song, and congrats to everyone who made huge progress in the puzzle without even knowing the song. For more mondegreens, there is a site dedicated to them, called www.kissthisguy.com |

Very good puzzle. When you said it was close to a pun I thought it would be a "groaner," but this was rather clever. I actually do have a copy of Bob Marley and the Wailers Greatest Hits that I bought for my husband last year. I looked, and Redemption is on it. I'll have to listen to it! |

Well we owe it to Peter for bailing us out! This one had me chuckling, and inspired me for an upcoming puzzle (but I'll wait until Peter puts his 80's music puzzle up first). I'm on the lookout for pirates who don't trim their hair or beards! |
