More of a joke than a puzzle, it is said to be solved by 5- and 6-year-olds in a matter of seconds, but to present a real challenge for grownups. As title suggests, it consists of three parts, introduced one at a time, after the previous one is solved. Only complete answers count. Enjoy! Part 1. How do you put an elephant into refrigerator in 3 steps? |

1. Open the fridge door 2. Put the elephant in 3. Close the fridge door Correct This was too easy. Is this a classic? Should we move it there? |

I don't think it's a classic, but it's not really a puzzle that can be solved by yes/no answers-you either know it or you don't. It's a good one, though...why not post the other parts and leave it to those who haven't heard it before and see if they can work it out? |

The giraffe...it's still in the fridge Oh! You knew! And this makes a *************** SPOILER *************** I usually get a lot of hilarious questions for the last part. By the way, have anyone tried this on a 5-year-old? Thanks everybody! Now, to find some "real" puzzles... |

Ther's one last part which will probably go in the first post, but i though I might as well add it if you don't mind me hijacking your puzzle! Two children are walking in the forest. They must cross the river to fetch apples, but there is no bridge or boat and the river is infested with crocodiles and piranhas. How do they get across safely? |

They wait for the piranhas to eat the crocodiles, but the crocodiles are poisonous, so the piranhas all die horribly, and the children wade across? |

I actually hadn't heard this before and my first post was in jest more than anything. But having followed the logic of the questions i suppose the last answer is that there is no crocodiles because the hunter killed them all. Either that or they went to the elephant's funeral. I asked my 7 year old daughter the first question and she got it right without a moments hesitation. Oh to be young again. |

These particular crocodiles and piranhas turned vegetarian because there were no children to eat before those two came along and the animals had to survive on apples. |

Peter got it right...the hunter killed the crocodiles and piranhas in part 3 so they just swam across. Points go to Woddworm and Emeraldink for originality though! |

I would imagine nothing that is kept in the fridge, since the giraffe would get in the way... :-) |

Enjay: I was thinking about the giraffe meat that was in the fridge... Could you imagine people squabbling over who would get the neck (or the legs)! |

You have an empty (but functional) electric kettle, an empty cup, a teabag, and a tap (faucet for USian readers) that dispenses cold water. In four steps (or fewer) describe how you would make a cup of tea. Next: you have a kettle full of cold water, an empty cup, a teabag, and a tap that dispenses cold water, In two steps (or fewer) describe how you would make a cup of tea. If your five-year-olds can do this, send them to CalTech as soon as they turn six. |

Procedure Tea_A Parameters:
Electric_Kettle, Cup, Teabag, Water Electric_Kettle.fill ( Water ); While NOT Water.boil = TRUE
Electric_Kettle.heat; Cup.fill ( Teabag ); Cup.fill ( Electric_Kettle.contents ( Cup.size_of ) ); END Tea_A Procedure Tea_B Parameters:
Electric_Kettle, Cup, Teabag, Water If Electric_Kettle.contents <> 0
Electric_Kettle.empty(); CALL Tea_A ( Electric_Kettle, Cup, Teabag, Water ); END Tea_B The step ( or "statement" in computerese ) in this made-up language is a line that ends with a semi-colon; BTW, I thought both elephant and giraffe were placed into fridge alive ( there was no "kill" step ) and survived prolonged refrigeration quiet nicely ;-) And, of course, everybody is welcome to join the party! |
