so, he was in front of a bridge, and he was worried that if the bridge collapsed while he drove over it, he might kill the ducks that were under the bridge. did he try to get the ducks to fly away so he wouldn't accidentally kill them if the bridge did break? if so, is it important how he tried to get the ducks away--did he yell at them? throw things at them? was he only worried about the ducks, or was he concerned about his life as well? I personally would be more worried about myself than ducks. do we need to find out what the sign said? if so, did it just say something to the effect of "use caution when driving over bridge" or did it have a more dire warning? did he have to cross the bridge? could he use another route? was his errand necessary, or could he simply return home and not do whatever errand it was? |

sorry about the confusion--I guess when I say "on the truck" I don't think literally on top of the truck but in the truck (i.e. in bed of pickup truck, in back of a semi...) does it matter what type of truck it is? I am assuming the ducks are in crates or some type of storage container? did he take out any of the ducks? does he take out their "containers" and leave the ducks in the truck? does he take something else off of the truck? my guess is that he takes the ducks, containers, or something else, off the truck, drives the truck over the bridge, goes back across to retrieve whatever he took off, and then loads his truck on the other side of the bridge.... or does he somehow take some air out of his tires? would this lighten the load? (or could he even drive this way?) |

ok so a truck driver needs to cross a bridge which has weight restrictions and his truck is too heavy. He decides that the only possible way to get accross the bridge is to lighten his load. His load just happen to be ducks, so he decides he needs to take their weight out of the equation. He tries to get all the ducks flying around the inside of the truck, then goes and drives forward onto the bridge. The bridge collapses and the truck is damaged. do we need to know more about the bridge? the truck? the ducks? was the driver injured? |

I believe that this doesn't work because the air pressure under the ducks when they are aloft exerts the same force on the floor of the truck as do the ducks when they are standing. |

I believe that this doesn't work because the air pressure under the ducks when they are aloft exerts the same force on the floor of the truck as do the ducks when they are standing.YES!!! TIME FOR A ************************SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!****************** The speaker is a truck driver. He has a load of ducks but exceeds the weight limit of the bridge. Having a (Not so) Smart idea, he hit the side of the truck, hoping the ducks would fly up and lesson the weight. What he forgot was Newton's law, Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The downdraft from their wings created the exact force as the ducks themselves, the driver goes on the bridge, Crack... BOOM! |

It's not so much (or at all) the downdraft from the wings of the ducks. The method envisaged by the driver would not work even if the ducks could hover in the truck without moving their wings at all. The total mass of the truck - which is what determines the gravitational pull of the Earth on the truck, which in turn determines whether the truck is too heavy (or strictly speaking too massive) for the bridge - remains constant however that mass is distributed within the truck. However, if instead of being on the floor of the truck the ducks could hover near the top of the truck, the gravitational pull of the Earth on the ducks (and hence the truck) would be weakened (because the ducks are further from the centre of the Earth). But the difference this makes would be entirely negligible for practical purposes, unless the truck was very large indeed and contained a very great many ducks. This information brought to you by woubits inc, pedants to the gentry since 1903 and possibly earlier still. |

Hmm...I have to disagree with Woubit here. The downward force does indeed equalize the extra gravitational pull exerted on the truck. If the ducks were able to magically hover in the air without exerting a downward force (which is physically impossible...) then they would no longer be part of the mass of the truck. It would be as though the ducks had been sitting on top of the truck...if they were to fly away they would no longer be weighing the truck down. The ONLY reason the ducks are considered part of the mass of the truck even when they are flying in the truck is that they are in a closed space in which the gravitational pull based on their mass when sitting down is replaced exactly by the downward force exerted by the act of flying. And those forces are necessarily equal...that is the physics of flight. I hope that made sense. I'm quite sleep deprived so I'm not sure I put my thoughts into words very well. Oh, and I also must ask if anyone here watches the show Mythbusters....because they actually tested this scenario. But with pigeons I think. It was quite entertaining. |

Hi there, I know no one has posted here for two and a half years and probably no one will read this, but I couldn't read through the puzzle without adding my own views, being a physicist and a little obsessive... If the birds can hover without exerting a downwards force then they effectively have no mass, therefore do not contribute to the mass of the truck. Of course this is physically impossible, but if the bridge was very small and the perches were very high and the birds couldn't fly, and instead they just fell off their perch and didn't reach the ground until safely across the bridge, this would technically work. The birds are exerting no downards force on the Earth therefore do not contribute to the weight of the truck. Also, if the part of the truck which was holding the birds was in fact a cage, where the air which they pushed down with their wings could escape, he may be able to drive across the bridge, as long as he gave a little leeway for the fraction of air which did reach the bottom of the cage or the bridge. I don't expect anyone to read or reply to this but it's put my mind at rest. Sorry if I've come off looking a bit weird for posting this... |
