Mary greeted and welcomed everyone, and told them to be silent. One person spoke, followed by a second, and then another. Mary then shouted at the first person to have spoken after her, but did not shout at anyone else. Why did she not shout at anyone else?

Does angry Gary put on heels and become angry Mary? LOL

are any of the anonymous speakers Mary?
did anyone ask a question?
did anyone answer a question?
after #2 spoke Did Mary tell #2 to be quiet?
were #1 and #3 expected to speak?

just to clarify... would this sequence work.. Mary greeted and welcomed everyone, and told them to be silent.. #1 spoke, then #2 spoke, then Mary yelled, then #3 spoke?

how about this..
Mary greeted and welcomed everyone, and told them to be silent.. #1 spoke, then #2 spoke, then #3 spoke then Mary yelled at #3 ?

are there any relevant items in the classroom?

Different languages again?

Did person #1 deliberately mistranslate Mary's instruction?

Eg: Mary says: "Silence in class" to a bunch of French children, and #1 says 'Elle a dit "parlez entre vous"'?

Does angry Gary put on heels and become angry Mary? LOL No. Mary is his third cousin twice removed. But that's irrelevant ;-)

are any of the anonymous speakers Mary? No
did anyone ask a question? No
did anyone answer a question? No
after #2 spoke Did Mary tell #2 to be quiet? Mary never told a second speaker to be quiet.
were #1 and #3 expected to speak? No-one was expected to speak.

just to clarify... would this sequence work.. Mary greeted and welcomed everyone, and told them to be silent.. #1 spoke, then #2 spoke, then Mary yelled, then #3 spoke? No

was it this order?:
a. Mary spoke
b. #1 spoke
c. Mary yelled at #1
d. #2, #3, etc. spoke?

was #1 hard of hearing? was #1 being rude?
were the rest defending #1 after he was yelled at?

oops I had the puzzle all backwards!.. I'll use booklovers format here..

was the sequence...
a. Mary spoke
b. #1 spoke
c. #2, #3, etc. spoke?
d. Mary yelled at #1

Did mary have good vision?
would Mary have yelled if #2 & #3 were silent?
were 2 and 3 trying to silence 1?

was it this order?:
a. Mary spoke
b. #1 spoke
c. Mary yelled at #1
d. #2, #3, etc. spoke? No

was #1 hard of hearing? No

was #1 being rude? Yes, given the context.

were the rest defending #1 after he was yelled at? No-one defended #1

====

was the sequence...
a. Mary spoke
b. #1 spoke
c. #2, #3, etc. spoke?
d. Mary yelled at #1 No

Did mary have good vision? Yes

would Mary have yelled if #2 & #3 were silent? Only one person needed to speak for Mary to yell.

were 2 and 3 trying to silence 1? No-one tried to silence 1

====

Just to clarify earlier answer in case anyone was being confused by it:
were #1 and #3 expected to speak? - I said no-one was expected to speak - technically, Mary was expected to speak, so I should really have said no-one except Mary was expected to speak. Anyway, that's not really important, so play on :-)

after Mary spoke, did 3 different students speak?

in this sequence..

quote:

a. Mary spoke
b. #1 spoke
c. #2, #3, etc. spoke?
d. Mary yelled at #1

where is the flaw? A? B? C? D?

quote:

followed by a second and then another

does this mean that a second passed and then another second, as in measurements of time?

-----Spoiler-----
Answers to sixtyeight's questions below, which fairly much complete the puzzle when put together. Well discovered, sixtyeight, thought I might be able to string you all along for a little longer ;-)

after Mary spoke, did 3 different students speak? No

in this sequence..
a. Mary spoke
b. #1 spoke
c. #2, #3, etc. spoke?
d. Mary yelled at #1
where is the flaw? A? B? C? D? C

does this mean that a second passed and then another second, as in measurements of time? Yes

Which put together, gives us the answer:

Mary welcomed everyone and asked for silence.
Someone talked.
Two seconds later, Mary shouted at him.

So, in answer to the question, Mary only shouted at one person because only one person spoke :-)
