Did he do anything relevant in the break? Have a drink? something to eat? smoke a cigarette? Did he actually solve the problem just by taking a break? As in, he got back from the break, and there was no problem any more? Or did he come across a method of solution during the break which he could then use to solve the problem? |

Is the fact that skipping stones make the stones go further across the water before sinking relevent? or perhaps the multiple splashes? Is he trying to scramble sonar? Increase range of ballistic weaponry? Increase range of vehicles? Trying to reduce fluid friction? Is the water even important? Could he be trying to do the same trick on another fluid? (I don't recall hyperplanes being built during WWII, but they use a similar idea on the atmosphere (and as far as I know, are still hypothetical...)) |

so the problem was that the commander wanted to attack a target from his battleship yet he needed to stay out of range to avoid being hit, so when he saw the kids skipping stones he had an idea to lower his trajectory which made his ballistics skip on the sea thereby increasing their range? |

He didn't want to have his ships shot in retaliation, so he was looking for an answer. It came when he was on leave and brought his kids to the beach. He saw them skip rocks on the water, and used that idea to use skipping mines or something like that! |
