When he told about the explosion, he couldn't help but to laugh. Inspired by BeccaAnn's puzzle, but otherwise unrelated. |

He blows up something man made. It's not demolition, it's not something he made himself, yet it's still not a crime. Is this correct? Does someone ask him to blow this thing up? The thing that was blown up; smaller than a mobile phone? bigger than a mobile phone, smaller than a book? bigger than a book, smaller than a chair? bigger than a chair, smaller than a bed? bigger than a bed, smaller than a car? bigger than a car, smaller than a house? bigger than a house? |

I am a bit puzzled by that 'broad definition' of blowing up. There was an explosion, right? A physical explosion, ie something was destroyed? And he was responsible? But he did not blow it up as such, in the normal definition of 'blowing up, right? |

Strictly a bit farther from this... a hard solid, like metal, wood or ice? ... and a bit closer to this, but in practice actually none of these. So this is the definition of "solid" that you're using: retains a fixed volume and shape rigid - particles locked into place not easily compressible little free space between particles does not flow easily rigid - particles cannot move/slide past one another ? or this one: The solid state of matter is when the material has a definite volume or size and distinct shape at a given temperature. ? or this one: Solids -> molecules/atoms tightly packed. Force of attraction between molecules overcomes any translational motion of molecules (they do, however, vibrate in position). ? or is it something else? I'm not entirely sure which one a chemist would use... Anyway, is the substance in the container one which exhibits all three general states of matter? If yes to that question, can it also be a plasma? If no to the first question, can it be liquid as well as solid, but not gaseous? Like lava? Can it be gaseous and solid, but not liquid? I can't think of one off-hand, but I'd be completely unsurprised to find out that there's at least one substance that exhibits this property... Can it only be solid? |

Rabrab Posted on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 - 7:22 am: So this is the definition of "solid" that you're using: retains a fixed volume and shape rigid - particles locked into place not easily compressible little free space between particles does not flow easily rigid - particles cannot move/slide past one another ? no or this one: The solid state of matter is when the material has a definite volume or size and distinct shape at a given temperature. ? no or this one: Solids -> molecules/atoms tightly packed. Force of attraction between molecules overcomes any translational motion of molecules (they do, however, vibrate in position). ? yes, or something similar or is it something else? I'm not entirely sure which one a chemist would use... well, well - it is not a liquid nor a gas Anyway, is the substance in the container one which exhibits all three general states of matter? I miss the smileys. <pout> Is the substance purely naturally occurring, like stone? or is it an artificially modified state of a naturally occurring thing, like concrete? [I know concrete has a liquid form, so that not it, but like that...] or is it a purely artifical compound, like gunpowder? I'm not sure that those questions are phrased very well; I probably should go to bed -- it's 3:00 am my time. |

OK, I'm back <smile> Is the solid inside the container one large chunk? several smaller chunks? many small bits? a powder? Is the original, naturally occurring thing's origin mineral? vegetable? animal? Is the modification one that can happen accidentally? Does the modification require human action? OK, Emeraldink identified the powder as flour, so, do we need to know what the container was exactly? Since it was "not-un-balloonlike", The qualities of the container which make it "not-un-balloonlike": Are they physical qualities of the material? non-permeability to air? non-permeability to water? elasticity? is it made from latex? or rubber? Are they visual qualities? size? color? dimensions? Was it a plastic bag? If so, trash bag-sized (capacity measured in tens of gallons or hundreds of liters?) a liner bag? (capacity in single-digit gallons?) a food-storage bag? (capacity at or under 2 gallons/10 liters?) a sandwich bag? (capacity under 1 quart/liter?) "Not really an explosion": were you using "explosion" in the strict scientific sense here? (A sudden, almost instantaneous release of of pressure, gas, heat and light when subjected to sudden shock, pressure, high temperature or applied potential?) If so was it not an explosion because it lacked speed? because it did not emit light? heat? gas? (I don't see how it could avoid emitting shock...) Did the container contain substantial amounts of air as well as the flour? When he told the story, was he laughing at the way something? or someone? looked? reacted? behaved? as the bag of flour exploded? Or was he laughing about the result of the flour bomb? (a particularly stuffy person covered with flour, perhaps?) |

are we talking about flour here as in flour in which you make bread, biscuits, etc.? if so, was it simply a bag of flour--made out of paper (or some type of paper)? had he placed the thing of flour on the road himself? had the flour fallen out of someone else's car (maybe someone on their way back from the grocery)? did he see the container of flour before it was run over? or did he "feel a bump," look back and see the "explosion" of powder and then realized that he had run over the flour? can't remember if he is the driver or the passenger or if that is relevant... |

Ok, still on the container: Is it tubular as in forming a ring, with a nozzle, spout, or valve sticking out, like an inner tube, a tire or a swim-ring? or tubular as in having a generally circular cross section and an indeterminate long dimension, like a hose or a piece of surgical tubing? You said that it probably isn't on any short lists of containers. Does this mean that most people would never see one? that most people wouldn't think of it as a container? What's your best guess at what the probability is that an average person picked at random from the population has seen one: Less than 10%? 10% to 25%? 25% to 50%? 50% to 75%? 75% to 95% greater than 95%? If I saw one under the most likely scenario, would it be empty? prefilled? Could it be refilled at a factory or by a business? Could I refill it? would I be likely to want to? |

She didn't say that it was surgical tubing, only that it was like surgical tubing in shape, unless I've completely misread her answer. The tubing: could I most buy it at a food store? an office supply store? a hardware store? a building supply store? a gardening supply store? a clothing store? a sporting goods store? an appliance store? a furniture store? Would I be most likely to use it in my garden? my garage? my car? my office? myt house? If 'my house', in which room is it most likely to be: kitchen? bathroom? bedroom? living room? workshop or hobby area? near my computer? in a closet or storage area? Is its diameter under 1/2 inch? under 1 inch? under 2 inches? under 5 inches? under one foot? Was the length that he ran over under 1 foot long? under 2 feet? under 3 feet? under 10 feet? under 50 feet? Was it sealed or closed off at both ends? at only one end? open on both ends? When the car ran over it, did the tubing actually split open, or did the flour simple shoot out one (or both?) ends? |

By Rabrab on Friday, July 20, 2007 - 7:45 am: Was the hose being used to move flour from one storage area to another? yesish Is the exact location relevant? well, yes If yes, was he at a flour mill? a food processor of some sort? a bakery? this Was the hose a standard way of moving the flour or was it an unusual circumstance? standard Is there anything specific about the car that we need to find out? no Is there anything more about the other two people involved that we need to find out? a bit |

Hum. OK, then. The hose was standard operating procedure; and it was somewhere where it could be driven over in a car. Was the hose running from a flour truck to the bakery building? from an outdoor storage tank to inside the building? Driving over the hose caused the explosion of flour, but the hose didn't split (did it burst at all? tear?) and the flour didn't shoot out of one or both ends. So: Did the flour that covered the car actually come from the hose? or did it come from one of the things the hose was hooked up to? Did his driving over the hose pull it loose from the connection at one end? He was laughing at how something looked as a result of the flour explosion: did the flour cover a large area? many other cars? the truck? the truck driver? the bakery building itself? |

Pretty good questions for a first post, Radgon, and welcome to the forums! Did he call it "Flour Power?" Sorry, that was bad... Hmm...Long shot here... Perhaps the person who "liked him very much" was doing a wedding or something like a party, and they wanted a big white Poof to go off, or use it instead of rice, in the case of a wedding. They hooked the hose full of flour up to the bakery so it had a nice flow of the puffy white stuff, then the man drove over it, but instead of shooting out beautifuly in one direction, the flour poofed out in a giant cloud all over the place to the great amusement of everyone present??? riiiight? ;] Or maybe the Mythbusters are involved somehow... |

Was the flour meant to shoot out in a particular direction, but the lateral curvature of the car wheel result in the hose lifting up at the ends, consequently discharging the flour somewhere else? |

Hi! I'm back! Obviously I should have waited for your excellent questions before leaving, but we were late for the 70-year-party as it was... Rabrab Posted on Friday, July 20, 2007 - 4:17 pm: Hum. OK, then. The hose was standard operating procedure; and it was somewhere where it could be driven over in a car. Was the hose running from a flour truck to the bakery building? YES! from an outdoor storage tank to inside the building? this would also have been possible Driving over the hose caused the explosion of flour, but the hose didn't split (did it burst at all? tear?) well, it was in several parts, treaded/screwed together, which came apart and the flour didn't shoot out of one or both ends. So: Did the flour that covered the car actually come from the hose? yes or did it come from one of the things the hose was hooked up to? Did his driving over the hose pull it loose from the connection at one end? no, see above He was laughing at how something looked as a result of the flour explosion: did the flour cover a large area? fairly many other cars? the truck? the truck driver? the bakery building itself? but no to rest Cbeck Posted on Friday, July 20, 2007 - 8:29 pm: When he told the story, did he use any words that rhymed? no Haenlomal Posted on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 - 4:05 pm: May we have a recap, please? no need, see below Rabrab Posted on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 - 6:42 pm: I think that Brid is off on another holiday. Must be nice... ;P Quite! But now it will be work every week, five days most weeks, until Christmas. Radgon Posted on Friday, August 03, 2007 - 2:20 pm: new here..haha but i like this thing. ok so heres the story: When he told about the explosion, he couldn't help but to laugh. he 'told', so was he telling to the other person involved? he told his friends several times afterwards he couldn't 'help' but to laugh, as in couldn't hold his laughter or couldn't help as in the meaning of save the other person involved? the first one hey i dunno but i may be asking something stupid, but afterall its my first try yarh? 's all right Blazingphoenix Posted on Sunday, August 05, 2007 - 4:07 am: Pretty good questions for a first post, Radgon, and welcome to the forums! Did he call it "Flour Power?" Sorry, that was bad... he could have, only we were not spaking English at the time... Hmm...Long shot here... As we were about to cross the yard and get out we saw that flour was being delivered by a large hose, threaded together from several pieces. The old baker told us to drive across it, no problem - but it must have been put together carelessly, because it came apart, and in half a moment flour covered the yard, our friends and our car, outside and inside, because the windows were all down. We couldn't help laughing even then, as we tried to clean the car enough for starting again, and The Flour Explosion was one of my father's favourite holiday stories for years to come. I don't think the car ever got free from flour inside. |

Very nice. It still hadn't occurred to me that it could have been a connection somewhere along the length of the hose that separated... |
