I'm completely new to these forums, but I did a keyword search and I don't think this puzzle or a similar one has been posted here, so I'll give this a try! Two scientists are collecting rock samples when suddenly they encounter a threatening animal. The first scientist, remembering his training, leaves slowly and lives. The second scientist panics and flees quickly; he dies. |

was the scientist who died killed by the animal? did the first scientist survive because the animal went for the other one? were the two scientists collecting rocks in the same place? at the same time? would it be helpful to find out what animal? were the scientists diving? |

Does the second scientist die... ...from being attacked/eaten by the animal? ...from a fall? ...from being stranded? ...from being crushed? Is the relevant "training"... ...training in their scientific field? geology? ...training in how to evade hostile animals? Does the animal try to attack the fleeing one? Does the animal even notice the one who leaves slowly? |

This isn't a classic I've ever heard of, but I think I see the answer... |

I just joined last night-the policy is that if you think you solved the puzzle you should not post your guess? If enough people say they think they solved it, am I supposed to post the spoiler or wait for people to keep guessing? At any rate, for those of you who just want to confirm your guess, you may email me at: chmoore@vassar.edu Thanks! |

Generally, if you've still got people who are working on it, there's no need to $piol it just because others think they know the answer. In this case, if it were mine, I'd keep it going as long as Alex and Ostap were working on it. As long as there's a working e-mail address in your profile (which there is,) folks who think that they know can e-mail you. Sometimes solvers will mention that they know, or think they know, so that the puzzle's host will know why they either aren't taking part at all or are dropping out suddenly. |

did the second scientist get the bends? Yes! *******SPOLIER******** Two scientists were scuba diving to collect rock samples underwater, when suddenly they saw a threatening animal: a shark. One scientist panicked and tried to get away from the shark as fast as he could, so he tried to rise up to the surface too quickly, and he got the bends. The other scientist remembered his scuba diving training and knew that if he rose rapidly he would get decompression sickness, the diver’s disease, because of the reduction in the pressure surrounding his body. |
