A complete stranger provided only his first name. We got mad at first, but then had a laugh when we realized his last name. Finally my first!! I hope it's fun!! |

the stranger = first his = second his? Did he personally provide his name to you all? Or did you just happen to hear him saying his first name? Was it his real first name? You getting mad ---> related to hearing this first name? or something else? If it's related to the name, is it because it sounded like he was saying something else, rather than announcing his name? So the combination of his first and last name was amusing? |

Were you mad because you felt he should have given his full name? But then you realised it was obvious what his surname was? Was he famous? Was he related to someone there or that you knew so would have had the same last name? |

Did he call you? Were you mad because you didn't want to talk to him? Had he called at a bad time? Was he trying to sell you something? Was the first thing said the stranger's saying "I'm..."? Amanda Hugankis is one of Bart Simpson's many prank phonecalls to Moe's bar - Moe ends up shouting that he needs "a man to hug and kiss" Did the first name that he gave you combine with the last name which he didn't give you to make a relevant phrase? did you work out what his last name was during the conversation? Is it relevant what his real name was? The cards: Post cards? some sort of ID cards? A credit-card shaped card that one could put in ones wallet? library card? Was his name written on a card? So there is some household dust in some way relevant to this puzzle? Was the dust in your house? Is some method for cleaning dust relevant? dustpan and brush? hoover? |

Ok, just starting in on the puzzle...forgive me if I ask some of the same questions (quickly scanned them)... I am assuming that the call was a prank call--am I correct in this assumption? Was this a close relative? Did he know you owed money? and maybe called to make you upset about what the "bank" or other financial institution was telling you? and maybe when he told you his full name, you put two and two together and realized it was a prank call and not the financial institution that was calling you? was he telling you that you owed more than you did? that a bill was overdue? that your credit card/phone/etc. was going to be cancelled/disconnected? |

How much time passed between you being mad and you realising his last name/laughing? Did you realise it during the phone call? Just after? Minutes after? Hours? Days? Did you gain any more relevant information that allowed you to work out his last name, or did you just work it out? |

Ok, just starting in on the puzzle...forgive me if I ask some of the same questions (quickly scanned them)... It's OK I don't mind repeat questions.. sometimes they help clear up misconceptions I am assuming that the call was a prank call--am I correct in this assumption? no.. he was doing his job Was this a close relative? the three players are Me, my wife and the caller, whose actual name remians unknown Did he know you owed money? yes and maybe called to make you upset about what the "bank" or other financial institution was telling you? no and maybe when he told you his full name, you put two and two together and realized it was a prank call and not the financial institution that was calling you? no/FA was he telling you that you owed more than you did?no that a bill was overdue? right track that your credit card/phone/etc. was going to be cancelled/disconnected? right track but further How much time passed between you being mad and you realising his last name/laughing? minutes or seconds will work Did you realise it during the phone call? no Just after? Minutes after? Hours? Days? Did you gain any more relevant information that allowed you to work out his last name, yes or did you just work it out? seqeunce would be end phone call, relevant info, anger, laughter |

So...the phone call ended, and you didn't feel either particularly angry or amused? Then you received some new information, and felt angry? But then, you used the info to work out his ful name and laughed? Or did you begin feeling angry at all during the phone call? The thing that he was telling you, did it mean you would have to pay more money? That you would lose a privilege? That you hadn't done something you should have done? Or had done something you shouldn't have? |

how relevant is your wife in this situation? did she know about your phone call after you told her about it? or was she listening to your side of the conversation? had she had a similar call as well? if so, did she mention this to you? (could this be the "relevant info" after the phone call)? had a bill been paid? lost? forgotten about? is it important to this story whether you pay bills by mail or online? did the man mention legal action/suing? |

Hint: here is what was said on the phone.. *Ring*... "Hello?" "Hi, may I speak to Mary?" "No she's not here right now." "could you tell her to call me at 555-8693?" "Who is this?" "It's Bill, I'm an old friend from High School." *click* sorry, I might have blooped when I said that this was not a conversation, but anyway that was the dialogue. :-) so, what was his last name?..... |

Bill Ode/Owed? Bill K. Lecter/Bill Collector? (crazy guess)not too crazy, in fact a ********** SPOILER! ********* Booklover spoils it!! My wife returned home after that phone call and I told her that an old friend had called.. and his name was Bill. Well she racked her brains and tried to think back at who she knew from 10 years back named Bill... and came up with no one. However when we looked at the phone number we saw that it matched the number of someone who had been repeatedly calling to speak to my wife and we figured out exactly who it was. This happened around 10 years ago when we went through some financial hard times. We had trouble paying a credit card bill (or it might have been medical) and it went to collection. the Bill Collectors used to call us and pressure us to make payments and after awhile they would get very abnoxious. If they thought someone was blocking their calls they would lie and do whatever they could to get the debtor on the phone. The other clues were when I answered Enjay's question with the question ... Will you? and the title referred to "collect calls" "card collectors" and "dust collectors" Thanks to all who played along!! |
