Three children growing up in North Korea had a joke: Americans were so rich & wasteful that some of them actually pleemed. This was supposed to be a parody, but when one of the boys grew up he escaped to South Korea, where, unlike North Korea, information flows freely. Imagine his surprise when he learned that pleeming is a recognized activity that some Americans do engage in. Imagine your surprise when you guess what pleeming is, What is pleeming?? |

Is pleeming connected to Having knowledge? Throwing things away? Having a lot of money? Wasting food? Wasting other things? Do a lot of Americans do it? Is it completely accepted in America, or would somebody pleeming be frowned upon at all? Would the Americans take being able to pleem for granted? I live in England; is it likely that I pleem? |

Would a poor American be able to pleem? Or is it only fairly well off people who can do it? Is the activity for fun? A game of some kind? |

is it relevant which food is wasted during pleeming? is food wasted in raw form? after some preparation? in this form of "wasted" do you mean "not eaten"? or is it wasted in another aspect? is the food arranged in any way before it is wasted? does pleeming happen where eating happens? where food preparation happens? where grocery shopping happens? where farming happens? |

Food fights? Not eating some part of something edible that could well be eaten? For eg. a lot of people leave out the crust of bread in sandwiches and pizzas... Another guilty party would be us Hindus in our weddings where the ceremony reaches a coda with the dearly beloved jubilantly throwing rice at the bride and groom. Fun, but rather prodigal... |

Is the food that is wasted eaten? Is any of it eaten? Is it thrown away after pleeming? Is this a game that is won by somebody? Or a team? The Americans that disapprove of pleeming...is this because they disapprove of wasting food? Or for some other reason? Does pleeming make the food inedible? Does it make a mess? Could you do it indoors? Outdoors? Could you do it in North Korea, if you had the food to waste? |

I don't know. You could certainly do it in South Korea (although I don't know of anyone who does), but there's so little freedom in North Korea that I wouldn't feel confident in saying there's much of anything you could do. |

So the food that is "wasted" is eaten, correct? Then it would be considered "wasted" because... ...some of it is thrown away? ...it is eaten by something other than humans? ...something done to the food before eating? ...some people think there are better things to do with the food other than eat it? ...the food is particularly expensive or difficult to make or prepare? ...people are eating too much of it? Is pleeming competitive eating? A specific form of competitive eating? Is the goal to eat as much as you can in a short period of time? Is vomiting involved? |

Imagine his surprise when he found out that some Americans actually do this. Imagine my surprise (& dismay) when I found out that this puzzle was so easy. It confirms my view that I'm a lousy judge of the difficulty of my puzzles. I thought this would be harder than my Korean Puzzle #4, which now has 80 entries & no solution. By the way, I've never been in an eating contest, although I bet I could win one for cinnamon buns or layer cake. And I think it's ridiculously puritanical to criticize these contests on the grounds that they waste food. No one criticizes people for wasting money on recreational travel--or for wasting time by doing lateral puzzles.Nothing that brings pleasure is wasted so please check out my new, harder(?) puzzle at the bottom of the page!! |
