Are there any foods she can't eat that are relevant? So people think she's obeying Jewish dietary laws, but really she can't eat them because of her diabetes? Do the people who think this know she is diabetic? If they did know, would they still think she was a very Orthodox Jew? |

Does Della do something relevant because of her diabetes? Or not do something? Something that causes people to think she is Jewish? Are any of the following things relevant about diabetics: Taking insulin injections? Controlling what they eat? Having to eat regular meals? Hyper/hypoglycaemic shock? Something else that happens to them if they aren't careful? Is there a relevant fact about diabetes that the people thinking she is Jewish don't know? Are any Jewish rules relevant? Attending services? Jewish customs? Celebrations? Any relevant Jewish people? Could people think Della was a non-Orthodox Jew for the same reason? |

Is the thing that people think she does because she's Jewish something prescribed in the Torah? In Genesis? Leviticus? Numbers? Deuteronomy? Exodus? Is it anything to do with what she eats? Does she do this thing regularly? More than once a day? Once a day? Every few days? every week? every month? every year? Do the people who think she is an Orthodox Jew have anything in common other than the fact that they know she does the thing she does? Does she have any relevant contact with any actual Jews? Orthodox Jews? |

Yes, I'm diabetic, but not on medication. And being Jewish is more an ethnicity than a religion - I know several atheist Jews (it surprised me to learn that - I had always thought of it as a religion). So it's not about food (at least noishly); presumably it's about exercise? Or physical activity? Is it related to physical activity after meals? |

Actually diabetes is more likely to make one lose weight. She could have some issues due to poor circulation, I suppose, if she'd let her blood glucose levels get out-of-control for a while. |

Because she's diabetic, her doctor made her watch what she eats? So she lost 100 lbs or so? Or is it genetic and she's losing weight to keep from getting full blown diabetes? And now her clothes don't fit? Thus they are baggy? Or her skin is sagging and she doesn't want anybody to see it? |

When the body isn't using sugar effectively it doesn't add calories, which is one way - the other is through diet and exercise (I've experienced both). But I haven't had to cover up, except that I get colder than I used to (less insulation). On the other hand I've lost something less than 40 pounds overall (my maximum was around 205 - like the photo in my profile). |

On the other hand I've lost something less than 40 pounds overall (my maximum was around 205 - like the photo in my profile) *********SPOILER ************* When Della got Type 2 diabetes, she had to lose 100 pounds. So she ended up flabby & now always wears long sleeves & pants or long skirts & tights to hide the flab. Because she has a Jewish name & appearance, people sometimes assume she's an Orthodox Jew who covers herself for religious reasons. You may not be surprised to hear that Della is your own Felicia Nimue, who, although never diabetic, lost even more weight than Della & ended up flabby. Why does no one ever ask me if I'm Amish? Well, I dress very flamboyantly, use lots of makeup, & love technology. And an Amish woman would never be a professor--they don't even go to high school!!
