I'm sure people could, but that's irr. to this situation--it's more of a hypothetical situtation--but with a real fear of something happenening that would reduce us to "eating bread and water". You have figured out that we would be reduced to bread and water (but seriously this couldn't get to that point), but you have to figure out what would happen to cause this. Farmers have even been forced to import bees because there just aren't enough pollinators out there - however, they're having the same problem everywhere in the world. Farmers have even been forced to import bees because there just aren't enough pollinators out there - however, they're having the same problem everywhere in the world. This is important because, in theory, if the bees became extinct it would only take 4 years before humanity became extinct with them. Colony Collapse Disorder (found the title) and all the problems associated with it? That's it, exactly! (Though I didn't even notice the title "colony collapse disorder" myself until I scanned the article on which I based my puzzle.) The article I had first noticed was http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18442426/ which stated that "Unless someone or something stops it soon, the mysterious killer that is wiping out many of the nation's honeybees could have a devastating effect on America's dinner plate, perhaps even reducing us to a glorified bread-and-water diet." Apparently honeybees "pollinate more than 90 of the tastiest flowering crops we have" including "apples, nuts, avocados, soybeans, asparagus, broccoli, celery, squash and cucumbers. And lots of the really sweet and tart stuff, too, including citrus fruit, peaches, kiwi, cherries, blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, cantaloupe and other melons."
