Maya the pit bull not only saved her owner from an attack but was instrumental in getting the suspect arrested, even though he got away at the time and was unknown to the victim. How'd she do that? If you've seen/heard this please donut $poil, thanks ever so. |

Did the suspect catch anything from Maya's bite? Did he have to go to hospital? Was he identified by something related to the fact Maya bit him? Did he leave some DNA behind in her mouth? Did she leave some behind on his body? Are dogbites like fingerprints, so they knew it was Maya that had bitten him? |

No. is another item relevant which is not a dedicated weapon? rope? chain? squeezie-toy? No to all. Did Maya meet the suspect outside the victim's house? Yes. I might need to clear something up - when I answered "yes" to an attempt to restrain Maya I was thinking about what he was doing when she came at him, if that makes sense (i. e. restraining her from tearing his throat out type stuff). Did Maya remain attached to the suspect? No. Did Maya have any relevant training? No. |

So was he found because he left DNA behind? He didn't leave any relevant fingerprints? If he hadn't been bitten, would Maya still have been able to help the police find him? Is it relevant where this took place? |

It was local (to me). ===================================== Booklover Posted on Sunday, October 28, 2007 - 12:51 am: thinking of things that might (I think) be able to identify dna: did the suspect leave hair behind? saliva? a nail? some skin? I meant more, is it relevant where this took place as in: someone's house? someone's garden? someone's place of work? a butcher? a baker? a candlestick maker? Were the police able to track him because they already had a sample of his DNA? and they found some of his DNA somewhere at the scene of the crime thanks to Maya? Was the DNA found on Maya? in Maya? on anything she was wearing? at the place where the attack took place? |

Ah. Not really - it was at the entrance to the victim's home. Were the police able to track him because they already had a sample of his DNA? Yes. and they found some of his DNA somewhere at the scene of the crime thanks to Maya? Yes. Was the DNA found on Maya? Yes. in Maya? on anything she was wearing? No to the rest. at the place where the attack took place? Correct. ===================================== Sixtyeight Posted on Sunday, October 28, 2007 - 6:25 pm: is it the suspect's DNA? *Whew* That's good.... I'm glad we didn't have to break out the list of stuff that has DNA.. it's just not pretty! So Maya bit Suspect, Suspect bled on Maya, then Suspect ran away? then Ms. Owner reported the case to the police? Did they immediately collect DNA samples? so sometime after this incident Mr. Suspect was arrested for another crime? at any point was he wanted for another crime? |

Sixtyeight Posted on Sunday, October 28, 2007 - 10:42 pm: So Maya bit Suspect, Suspect bled on Maya, then Suspect ran away? Exactly. then Ms. Owner reported the case to the police? She called right away to report the assault. Did they immediately collect DNA samples? Imagine trying to swab down an angry pit bull...yes, that's what they did (and it was indeed a challenge). so sometime after this incident Mr. Suspect was arrested for another crime? No. at any point was he wanted for another crime? Yes. I think it's close enough to spoyl, unless you want to drag out the last few details. Whatcha think? |

So soon after the crime, the suspect was arrested for another crime...and then treated by the police surgeon for an existing dog bite ..which proved to match to Maya's so... |

I'm thinking more, he was arrested for another crime, they took a sample of the DNA, and the clever labaratory man (or possibly the computer) said "oh, this is the same DNA we found in that dog's mouth the other week, unless the fella has an identical twin, something very fishy is going on" |

She had, however, managed to get the door open and Maya came streaking out to dissuade the suspect (Anthony Easley), who was attempting to fend her off while still holding the victim by the throat. At this point the victim took, ah, "matters" into her own hand, so to speak, which caused him to let go and flee (she restrained Maya at this point). When the police arrived, the victim had to hold Maya behind a door while an officer reached around to swab a spot just above her teeth (she was still a bit frenzied). The state of Cafilnoria (and likely other places) routinely takes DNA samples from anyone convicted of a felony or arrested for/charged with a homicide or sex offense, and Mr. Easley had two previous sexual felonies. Since he was otherwise unknown to the victim and didn't leave any other evidence, there was pretty much no other way he would've gotten caught. Maya, by the way, got a two-pound steak after the attack. This is from the San Jose Mercury News on Friday, Oct. 26: Bully! |
