them: not human, nor animal. But are adult and male... Is there something metaphoric involved, like personification of an inanimate object? Or is it similar to a trojan horse: a 'something' filled with explosives designed to explode when attacked (at close range) that resembled something threatening to an enemy? Or a ghost? | ||

Was it disguised as something else? Was something hidden in an attempt to fool the enemy? Was it a non-threatening object/person disguised as a threatening object/person? YES well done...that's a spoiler!!! ...occupy the enemy's attention while he attacked somewhere else? SPOILER ******* this is from a true story taken from the later Han Dynasty in China. The brilliant commander was Zhuge Liang. one version goes like this: a Northern army and a Southern army are on opposite sides of a river bank. The Northern army has traveled far and they are running out of resources. In previous fighting the Northern army used up all of their arrows, and at the same time they know that a decisive battle can gain everything they were after. They then collected a number of boats which they tied together , and in the boats they made straw dummies and dressed them in uniform. Taking advantage of the evening mist on the river, the Northern army launched the decoys so that the southern army, thinking that they were under a sneak attack, unleashed all of their arrows on the straw dummies, which were then collected to resupply the Northern army. |
