I was running late this morning, but I decided to take the long way to work. Why?

Is the long way to work actually shorter... by distance? By time? By lack of accident? By lack of congestion? By way of obstacle avoidance?

Are you human, adult, Female?
Are you going to work by car? train? Plane? boat? submarine? Bike? Walking? Running?

By taking the long way were you able to truthfully phone ahead and say you were stuck in traffic? thus avoiding an awkward situation at work when you had to explain why you were running late?

Or did going the long way enable to do something else thus saving time later on in the day...

Or (along same lines) did you realise that you would have to stay late to make up the time missed at the start of the day, so you went the long way to do that message you had intended to do after work?

Was there a reason why you could not have taken the shorter way to work? traffic accident? road closed? weather-related event?

Did going the long way delay your arrival at work?

Is there much of a difference between the long way and the shortest way? by distance? by time? by method of transport?

Bytaking the long way, were you hoping to arrive at work as quickly as possible? In other words, might the shorter way have actually taken longer on this particular day?

Relevant what day of the week it was? time of day?

Was there a parade or some kind of seasonal event that might have caused roads to be closed?

Did you take the long way because you wanted to drive past a particular place in order to acquire information? For example, a friend's house, to see if he was home? a store, to see if it was open?

Were you trying to avoid seeing somebody? I.e. your boss? A coworker? A business associate? If you were late and took the long way... does that enable you to be even later and avoid something/someone altogether?

Or were you trying to slip in unnoticed and know that person X drives/lives on the same route you do? Thus you were trying to avoid being seen by them?

Did you take the long way because there was something on the radio that you wanted to hear? a song? a newscast? the weather forecast?

Did it have something to do with a repair that your car needed that made it difficult to take the short route? For instance, you had a donut tire and didn't want to go over a bump?

Was it your car? Was it a new car? Were you just learning to drive a stick and wanted to avoid a steep hill?

Think of the drive train as being everything between the engine and the wheels, whether the car has front-, rear- or all-wheel drive. So for rear-wheel, it would be tranny, drive shaft, differential etc. Admittedly, when first used as a legal term in a guarantee, it was referring to rear-wheel drive 99% of the time...

So there is some specific feature of the short route which you are trying to avoid? Is there a relevant building on the short route (e. g. the police station)?

Is the need for repair obvious from just looking at the car? just hearing the car? when the car is being driven? when it is parked?

can you not turn in one direction very easily?yes so took a route where it was all right turns or similar?precisely!

The steering on my car is really screwy right now, and the effect is that making right turns is easy, but making left turns, while possible, is extremely difficult. I only live about 2 miles from work, but the route I usually take has several left turns, and there is a route that I can take where the only left turn is very slight. So until I can get the steering fixed, I take the longer route even if I'm running late.
