Is she an animal? Is she actually a cold-blooded murderer? Is the "victim" supposed to be humans? animals of the same species as "she"? Animals of a different species? Is "he" someone who has told us about the animals' behavior? Is the information "he" has given us accurate? |

Does this have to do with female praying mantises killing the male after mating? |

Hm, I was thinking it was maybe the snake talking Eve into eating the apple... Is it the male's fault because the physical act of mating literally causes the female to instinctively eat him? "Well, I gotta mate. Too bad that involves pushing this 'kill' button in her brain." |

Is the "he" a lab researcher? If I'm not mistaken, the females don't usually kill the males in the wild, but it almost always happens when they are in captivity. |

Beccaann (Beccaann) Is the "he" a lab researcher? If I'm not mistaken, the females don't usually kill the males in the wild, but it almost always happens when they are in captivity. Exactly. *****SPOILER The common wisdom that female praying mantises eat their mates comes from very flawed observations mainly by one researcher. It is very rarely observed in the wild, but if the poor insect is kept in inferior conditions in a lab, she is forced to eat her mate to have enough energy to lay eggs. Good work. |
