Eh. It was worth a shot! Are the sign numbers measured in miles per hour? Kilometers per hour? Something else? Is this an urban, suburban or rural area? A parking lot? Are there any other signs? Are any of these questions relevant, and if so, which? Does the puzzle depend on location, speed, type of vehicle, driver, historical era, time of day, time of year, weather? Is this on Earth? Is this a true story, or something you made up? If the latter, could it really happen? Are the signs you listed in the same order that you passed them in? Is this a modern sort of highway, or does it refer to a different kind of road? Are the signs less than 100 feet apart? More than a thousand feet? More than a mile? Are some closer to each other than others? Are any of these relevant? Are you driving? Flying? Riding? Walking? Are these relevant? If you go the other direction, do you meet signs reading 10 20 30 40 50? |

Largely irrelevant, but urban is unlikely A parking lot? No Are there any other signs? Irrelevant Are any of these questions relevant, and if so, which? Yes, the unit of measurement is relevant Does the puzzle depend on location, Yes speed, No type of vehicle, No driver, No historical era, No time of day, No time of year, No weather? No Is this on Earth? Yesish Is this a true story, or something you made up? Loosely based on a personal story, but it's made up. If the latter, could it really happen? Yes, theoretically... Are the signs you listed in the same order that you passed them in? Yes Is this a modern sort of highway, Yes or does it refer to a different kind of road? No Are the signs less than 100 feet apart? No More than a thousand feet? Yes More than a mile? Yes Are some closer to each other than others? No Are any of these relevant? Yes Are you driving? Yes Flying? No Riding? Possibly this too Walking? Again, possibly this as well Are these relevant? A little If you go the other direction, do you meet signs reading 10 20 30 40 50? No |

So the numbers refer to miles, but not miles per hour, right? Miles per second? Miles per minute? Miles per [some other unit of time]? Does the sixth sign mention an integer? Does it bear the name of a town? Do you actually obey the speed limit signs? Does 'yesish' to the Earth question simply indicate a fictional scenario? Or should we be guessing something extraterrestrial? Are the speed limits enforced? Could they conceivably be enforced by human beings? Do you cross any time zones? National frontiers? |
