Earlier yesterday I thought of a new, slightly clever use for these old or unwanted things.

What are they, what would you be using them for, and why exactly would it not be very clever at all to use your own?

For bonus points, point out some reasonable circumstances that might cause my plan to backfire.

Nothing to do with video games I promise.

Old Lateral Puzzles? A pair of socks? Old clothes? An old car? An old computer?

I can think of many things... "They" = old & unwanted things? These things... physically exist? Person? Place? Thing? Concepts? Something written? Ideologies?

If you can see/touch/etc. thing... is it smaller than a bread box? smaller than a person? will it fit in a bathtub? bigger than a person? bigger than a building?

A pair of socks? no
Old clothes? no
An old car? no
An old computer? no

I can think of many things... <b>there's a good reason for
"They" = old & unwanted things? close, but not quite, reread the statement.
These things... physically exist? yes
Person? they are not people
Place? they are not places
Thing? they are 'things'
Concepts? no
Something written? no
Ideologies? no

If you can see/touch/etc. thing... you can
is it smaller than a bread box? this is closest, although I'm too young to know exactly how big a bread box is
smaller than a person? will it fit in a bathtub? bigger than a person? bigger than a building?

HUH? You can buy anything in a store! Seriously! You can buy air, you can buy water, you can buy pigs blood, you can...

Urine? Other fecal matter? Hair (can buy this though)? Finger/Toenails? Something else the human body produces? Something an animal produces? Something a plant produces?

It isn't naturally produced? And it isn't something you can purchase? Can you even get ahold of one quickly in an emergency? At a gas station? If not, I think I see a place where this might backfire...

Is this something that is created by humans? In factories? In laboratories? Over many years of decomposition? Does it have to do with crude oil? With the nuclear program?

At a gas station? same
If not, I think I see a place where this might backfire...

Is this something that is created by humans? yes
In factories? In laboratories? 'factories' would be closest, but to be honest I'm not sure
Over many years of decomposition? no
Does it have to do with crude oil? With the nuclear program? no, nothing like this

Dlycgnet, if you can buy anything in a store, why ask the question "Is it something that you can buy in the store?" :>)

Do humans create this thing deliberately? Would you say that anyone owns any of these things? Do you own any of these things? Are they solid? liquid? gas?
Are they much smaller than a breadbox? smaller than a matchbox? than a human fist? Could you fit one inside a box of weetabix? Do they have a defined shape? Something nice and geometric? a cuboid? cube? sphere? oblate spheroid? prolate spheroid?

Do you own any of these things? yes

Are they much smaller than a breadbox? I seriously don't even know what a 'breadbox' is; bread comes in bags.
smaller than a matchbox? depends on the size of the matchbox
than a human fist? about this size

Could you fit one inside a box of weetabix? Weetabix...?

Do they have a defined shape? yes
Something nice and geometric? mostly
a cuboid? cube? sphere? oblate spheroid? prolate spheroid? none of these

Cylander? disc? flat?

Is it organic? metal? plastic? polymer? more than one material?

One specific color? multi-colored? or can it be one of many colors?

If I hit it with a hammer, would it... break into pieces? become dented? yield to the hammer then return to its original shape? not yield at all? make a noise?

Would this use involve giving the credit card to someone else? Would you possibly be trying to catch someone who is stealing other's identities?

Would you try to convince that person that the cc account is in good standing and the card is declined simply because it is expired which, of course, you did not realize but you have the new card at home and then they would believe you because you look like such an innocent, honest person and they would accept the card and give you the merchandise?

By "type of store" are you referring to what the store sells? How the store operates logistically? where the store is located? the physical layout of the store?

Would it need to be a window in which you pay for your food and pick it up at seperate windows?

would the drive thru be of a specific chain or would it work at any?
would your plan require any verbal communication between you and clerk?

Would the significance of the Drive-Thru be that you could make a quick getaway because you are in a vehicle?

Is it likely that the clerk would attempt to get your license plate # as you left?

Is it likely that the clerk would attempt to get your license plate # as you left? I doubt it, but it's something that would have to be considered.

One thing left: what exactly would I be stealing, and how?

Give them the credit card and when it is declined they ask you to pull over so you don't hold up the line and you take off? Only problem is...do you have your food? Don't most Drive-thrus expect you to pay before they give you your food? Is there another integral part of your plan that's being missed here?

and... erm... why not just drive off without paying? surely it's not much different to giving them an expired credit card and then driving off without paying. Maybe there's more of a twist than we're seeing...

Recap:
You're gonna use an expired credit card that isn't yours
to obtain something from a fast food restaurant by going through the drive-thru
and it is essential that they will know the card is expired?
And in the end, you don't pay for anything?

Do you need an accomplice for this? Does he/she work at the restaurant?

would the drive thru be of a specific chain or would it work at any? I'm not thinking of a specific chain, or anything, but this probably won't work at some stores.
Is this because of the layout of the drive-thru, or the size the building, or technology that this some fast food restaurants may have?

You take the food and leave without paying? possible FA(s) The faulty assumption is that you will take food? Are you taking condiments? Plasticware? Cups? Bags?

The fact that they have to recognize that the card is expired; are you trying to stall for time, possibly by asking them to try the card again and again? Or do you just need for them to direct their attention elsewhere?

Is the date that the card expires relevant?

Is the name on the card relevant (besides the fact that you don't want it to be your name)?

This definitely wouldn't work with cash?
Would this work with other establishments that have drive-thrus and require payment like a pharmacy?

When you give up the card, won't they ask for ID?

Is it McDonalds?
Burger King?
Wendy's?
Checkers?
A&W?
Arby's?
Jack-in-the-Box?
Something else?

Does it have a drive up window on each side (like Checkers)? Is that relevant?

Sorry, thought this was mostly solved by now, didn't know that it was still going on.

Takemeaway10:
Recap:
You're gonna use an expired credit card that isn't yours yep, but I could also use ...
to obtain something from a fast food restaurant by going through the drive-thru yes
and it is essential that they will know the card is expired? it isn't. in fact...
And in the end, you don't pay for anything? that's the plan, anyway! admittedly, risking a felony over anything you could get from a drive-thru is a really, really dumb idea, no matter how much you've planned in advance; don't try it at home.

Do you need an accomplice for this? no

would the drive thru be of a specific chain or would it work at any?
I'm not thinking of a specific chain, or anything, but this probably won't work at some stores.

Is this because of the layout of the drive-thru, this
or the size the building, maybe this, but mostly the layout
or technology that this some fast food restaurants may have? now that I think about it, this is arguable too

You take the food and leave without paying?
possible FA(s)

The faulty assumption is that you will take food? yep. so...?
Are you taking condiments? probably not
Plasticware? probably not
Cups? yes, and...
Bags? probably not

The fact that they have to recognize that the card is expired; FA
are you trying to stall for time, possibly by asking them to try the card again and again? you wouldn't ask them to do this.
Or do you just need for them to direct their attention elsewhere? well, sort of.

Is the date that the card expires relevant? no

Is the name on the card relevant (besides the fact that you don't want it to be your name)? the name isn't relevant, as long as...

This definitely wouldn't work with cash? no. ...well, you could purchase the items normally, but then you'd be paying for them.
Would this work with other establishments that have drive-thrus and require payment like a pharmacy? explain this more clearly.

When you give up the card, won't they ask for ID? photo ID, for payment via credit card? in a fast food lane? if this were the case, you'd have to find a fast food place that didn't require ID.

Howardwoman:
Is it McDonalds?
Burger King?
Wendy's?
Checkers?
A&W?
Arby's?
Jack-in-the-Box?
Something else? the specific chain isn't important. the two I'm thinking of aren't listed above, but figuring out which two wouldn't really help at all anyway.

Does it have a drive up window on each side (like Checkers)? no.
Is that relevant? well... maybe. the layout of the drive-thru is somehow important, but it's conceivable that a drive-thru fast food restaurant with a window on two sides would be designed in a way so that this would work.

would there have to be more than one window? do you get given drinks before they check/take payment? so maybe you get the drinks at one window, then move along to the next where you pay? meanwhile you drink the drink, and when they don't accept the credit card you give the cup back?

so maybe you get the drinks at one window, then move along to the next where you pay? if there's a fast-food place where drinks are given out at the first window, this will work.

Is the original owner of the credit card paying for your purchases?

Is it one of those fast food places where people pull into a parking space with a sign and a speaker and someone brings the food out?

You place an order including drink(s)?
You recieve the drink(s)?
The card you attempt to buy with is then checked?
You remove the drink(s) from the container(s) they were in?
Put a foreign substance into the drink container?
The card/payment must be/preferably is invalid?
- If so: It is not necessary that the invalidity is discovered during the incident?
The drink containers you are given are returned (with or without drink)?
Drink containers are returned (with or without drink)?
You leave with the drink in your possession?
You leave with the card in your possession?
It would work even if you were being constantly watched throughout?

the solution is that the drinks are often handed to you while they run your card. you aren't getting food, you're getting free drinks. you shouldn't use your own card because it has your name on it.
