I'm not sure, is this one of those about the 10 missing days in Europe?

Location relevant? Did he just arrive on the 5th then leave on the 11th?

I am in agreement with the post by crazypalpig at 2:16am: You just switched it around in the wording of the puzzle, i.e., he arrived on the 5th and left on the 11th. Correct?

But I thought the missing days were in a September, from the 6th to the 16th... So he left on the 11th from 1 place and the next day the time was changed so he arrived at the 5th?

He left location 1 on the 11th of November 1688? Julian calendar? gregorian calendar?
His leaving of location 1 occured prior to his arrival at location 2?
He arrived at location 2 on the 5th of November 1688? Julian calendar? gregorian calendar?

Are we working within currently accepted physical boundries (i.e. excluding concepts such as time-travel etc.)?

He arrived at Location 2 before he left Location 1... so he left Location 2 and arrived at Location 1 sometime between the 5th and 11th. Is the puzzle in figuring out that "Location 2" is just a placeholder, and not the second place he ended up?

Is it relevant that different places adopted the new calendar at different times? So two locations could each consider it to be a different date?

Did the calendar change whilst he was travelling?

You nearly have all of it... This was a very famous journey... at least in my part of the world! (that's got Peter thinking!) The dates (especially the year) should help...

Hmm must refer to either William of Orange or James II? I'm guessing William of Orange arrived in Britain on the 5th November having left Holland on the 11th November. Call me Mr thickie but I can't figure out whether that means Britain or Holland adapted the new calendar first.

*********** SPOILER *************

William of Orange landed at Brixham in England on 5th November 1688, according to the Julian Calendar, then in official use by England.

However the Dutch records show that he left on 11th November- according to the Gregorian calendar, used in the Netherlands as in most of Europe.

When England and her colonies (sorry folks!) adopted the new style calendar, many dates were left untranslated... this is one of them!

and I knew Peter couldn't resist that bait!

Yes I couldn't resist having a bite or should that be a Jacobite (boom boom)

We're certainly educating the masses with regards to our turbulent history!
