Shamelessly piggybacking on Nimue's concept, here's something I found interesting.

A lot of people who visit Iceland have a scrund that they probably won't realise even after their visit.

What is it?

Early spoileuses please email :-)

Doesn't Iceland have an unusual way of giving people surnames. I think that you take your father's christian name and add son to it so Icelandic men have a different surname than their father. IS this relevant?

Of course the above could be a scrund in itself.

Just for fun my surname would be Jamesson what would your's be?

Of course the above could be a scrund in itself.

Just for fun my surname would be Jamesson what would your's be? Funnily enough, we South Indians have a strange practice of our own when it comes to surnames. One's conventional surname is in fact simply your father's first name, while your so-called family name would be more like a conventional middle name. My father's first name is Prasanna, which is why I'm Abhay Prasanna. So in Iceland I would have been Abhay Prasannason. However I'm pretty sure I don't want to name my kid _ _ _ _ Abhay :-S

Here are the few things I think I know about Iceland. Which of these is relevant:

That Iceland isn't in the EU?
That Iceland and the UK competed over fish quotas?
That Iceland have won/not won the Eurovision Song Contest?
That the Cod Wars were not really wars?
That the average temperatures in any month in Rejkyavik rarely fall below zero?
That the clubbing scene is frighteningly expensive?
That the Icelandic name for their own country ("Island") probably doesn't come from the word "Ice"?
That Iceland had the first female PM in Europe?

That Sigur Ros's music is somehow tolerable?
That Bjork is talented in some way?

HINT: Focus on things that you would typically find out about a country before visiting it. For example, things that would be perfectly normal elsewhere, but unacceptable here... along those lines...

Does it have to do with Tipping? Paying the staff? Paying the cook? Do the Icelanders include all of that in the bill? Do they leave all of it off and expect their customers to know to tip generously? Does it have to do with taxed items? Some food is taxed and some isn't? Does it have to do with alcoholic beverages? All the food at the restaurant? Some of the food? Method of payment relevant?

Does it have to do with Tipping? Yes! Finally :-DPaying the staff? Paying the cook? Do the Icelanders include all of that in the bill? Yeah they do, but... Do they leave all of it off and expect their customers to know to tip generously? Does it have to do with taxed items? Some food is taxed and some isn't? Does it have to do with alcoholic beverages? All the food at the restaurant? Some of the food? Method of payment relevant?

This is enough for a .....

***********SPOILER*************

In Iceland, the service taxes account for the tip you would normally pay a waiter. People that visit Iceland are often told, "Whatever you do, don't tip a waiter; it's considered an insult." So they are paranoid about not tipping. However, if you ask a few Icelanders what they think about this, they'd hardly consider an extra tip as an 'insult'. They are all well aware of the concept, and though they may point out that you don't need to tip them, they'll happily pocket it if you insist.

Thanks for playing along!
