Earlier today, while I was practising my favourite hobby in the usual way, I discovered that I had something in common with someone I have never met, but known about for roughly two and a half years. Who is this person, and what do we have in common?

Is playing an instrument relevant? Composing? Conducting? none of these: bashing the piano is my second favourite hobby, and Chopin's nocturnes are all hard :-) |

In which of these domains would you classify your hobby? Technology? Arts? Crafts? Collecting? Social? none of these, but "social" is probably closest Is he/she a member of LTPF? Yes, inspired question! the clue is in the "Registered" date, of course |

Preliminary glances at other puzzles suggest: Peter365 perhaps? no Zephyr14? no: I may have many things in common with these fine people, but it's not the lateral connection I have in mind Your hobby is solving lateral puzzles? I love solving lateral puzzles, of course, but that's not the hobby in question Or other puzzles? not exactly this either (No claim to ingenuity here :-D) |

Is this a hobby you can practise only at night? no Or you choose to practise it in the night? no, the nocturnes are a red herring, I'm afraid, and the title is relevant in a much sneakier sense Does the hobby have anything to do with dancing? no Eating? no Drinking? no Talking? no Chatting? no Singing? no Crosswords? no, but ... Person in common: Insert LTPF list of members? I don't have such a list to hand, I'm afraid, but Woubit is your man ... Adult? Male? ... and I am fairly sure he is both of these Profiles relevant? no Relevant that your registered date is just over two and a half years ago? only in that this is the length of time I've been playing on this forum, and thus the length of time I've known of the existence of Mr Woubit |

Misspelling relevant? no Penchant for a particular (uncommon) word? No. Though I have many such penchants. A scrund? YES! Of sorts. In this and my other current puzzle, it's not so much a long-standing misconception as an amusing coincidence that I never knew about at the time (sheer ignorance on my part), but which came to light several years afterwards.

Drat after some quick calculations i've discovered that the letters of Howard Wilde score 22 while David Burn scores 16 also Woodworm scores 17 and Woubit 11 so it's not that. Did you make a particular word which led you to discover the commonality? If so was it a high scoring word? did it contain one of the high scoring letters like Z? Q? X? J? Is it relevant that Burn is a legal scrabble word? Is the letter W relevant? Oh and on a totally unconnected theme congrats to Durham on winning the County Championship. I'm sure your delighted with the Hot Dogs' success. |

I didn't play it on the board, no ... but a particular word is relevant If so was it a high scoring word? not especially did it contain one of the high scoring letters like Z? Q? X? J? none of those Is it relevant that Burn is a legal scrabble word? no ... Is the letter W relevant? noish Oh and on a totally unconnected theme congrats to Durham on winning the County Championship. I'm sure your delighted with the Hot Dogs' success. yes, and to think that only a few years ago, Durham was a so-called "minor county". Actually I live in N Yorks and come originally from Lancs, so I never quite know which county to support. Besides, the international stuff is so much more fun now we have KP. But well done indeed to the Mustard/Onions combo. |

Were you rearranging the letters you had drawn when you had this realization? Does the realization have to do with anagrams? Does the realization have something to do with similar letters in each of your names? Does the realization have to do with figuring out that a particular word is a real word? that a particular word is not a real word? (as defined by whatever your Scrabble standard dictionary is) Is a scrabble house rule relevant? |

Any specific puzzle that Woubit hosted relevant? or any of yours? Is the word more commonly used as a slang term but has a real meaning and therefore is legal in scrabble? I'm thinking of Woubits Overweight puzzle (can't remember the title) where he was prevented from posting the word SH*G. Any of this relevant? |

Any specific puzzle that Woubit hosted relevant? not that I know of or any of yours? no, apart from this one :-) Is the word more commonly used as a slang term but has a real meaning and therefore is legal in scrabble? not quite this, but meanings of words are certainly relevant. Incidentally, most slang words are fine in scrabble, including most of the filthiest ones. I'm thinking of Woubits Overweight puzzle (can't remember the title) where he was prevented from posting the word SH*G. oh yes, the crested cormorant, and not (as Isherwood believed) the common cormorant Any of this relevant? not really: no cormorants were involved in the making of this puzzle |

Had you met Woubit at a conference and not on this forum is it likely that you would be aware of the commonality? IF not a puzzle then is any particular post from yourself or Woubit relevant? A chatroom post perhaps? Is it relevant that Woubit is a moderator? Would it help to read both your's and Woubit's profile? Does the commonality relate to Likes? Dislikes? influences? passtimes? allegiances? Musical tastes? literary tastes? film tastes? Is it likely that you have this commonality with other members of the forum? Would one have to or ever have been resident in the UK to have this commonality ? |

Couldn't have gotten that many nos if i'd tried You said noish to "is the letter W relevant" so are the letters in your names or usernames relevant? any one specific letter relevant? vowels? consonants? Don't know quite how to phrase this but is there an element of a rulebreaker in this puzzle in that the word you thought of has a special relationship to your names or unsernames that it is unlikely to have to other forum members? |

Ok I can't resist asking. Is there a type of Woodworm called a Woubit? (add to ever growing list of questions I thought I'd never ask) Not quite, but the craziest questions often pay dividends in the kingdom of Lateralia. So let's go straight to the *** SPOILER *** I'm a scrabble player, so I like to learn new words. On the day I set this puzzle, I just happened to be browsing through a list of unusual words and discovered "Woubits". Obviously I'd seen Woubit's name on these forums but I had absolutely no idea what a woubit was. I suppose I assumed that it was a made-up name. In fact, according to my Chambers Dictionary: Woubit, n [usually Hairy Woubit]: a hairy caterpillar, especially one of the tiger moth. Also woobut, oubit or oobit. From the Middle English wolbode. And of course a woodworm is not a real worm, but the larva of the furniture beetle. So there we have it: our screen names are both types of insect larva. Who'd have thought it? Apologies as ever for a very silly puzzle, and congrats to Peter for cracking it. |

LOL . Like Dlcygnet i tried to look up Woubit on Wiki to no avail so i didn't expect that to be the solution. Weevils had occurred to me but my knowledge of wood eating larvae is quite limited. As ever the forum throws up topics that for some strange reason don't get much of an airing in everyday life. |
