Did this take place in the 21st century? 20th? 19th? 18th? 17th? 16th? 15th? I don't think they had guns before then, but I may be wrong. Was he publicly assassinated? Was the group that killed him acting as vigilantes? Were they law enforcement? |

Did this take place in the 21st century? This one. 20th? Possible, but 21st is much more likely. 19th? 18th? 17th? 16th? 15th? I don't think they had guns before then, but I may be wrong. Was he publicly assassinated? He was killed in public, but "assassinated" does not accurately describe what happened. Was the group that killed him acting as vigilantes? No. Were they law enforcement? Yes, with a very tiny "ish." |

So, to recap: A man of some age is indoors and does or says something that can be taken threateningly, although it was not intended to be so. 10 security guards, taking notice of this, open fire and kill the man. This occurred in the late 1990's or early 2000's. You said that the time PERIOD is important. Is it y2k related? 9/11 related? the bombings in Barcelona or London? The Power Rangers? =) |

I think I said "somewhere between 5 and 10, most likely," although the precise number is not particularly important, taking notice of this, open fire and kill the man. This occurred in the late 1990's or early 2000's. I'm going to go ahead and say early 2000's. You said that the time PERIOD is important. Is it y2k related? No. 9/11 related? I think I remember a shooting in an airport in either 2000 or 2001 either in late June or early July because it was just a few days from my birthday. I'm wanting to say LAX? As I recall it though the guy who got killed had a gun and shot people or at least discharged rounds, so I'm thinking that's not it. I don't remember any other airport shootings that occurred in 2000 tho. |

oh, icic. Was the action that precipitated the shooting a visible action? audible? did the man make the threatening gestures/noises with good reason but not that of threat making? does the man have friends or family involved? that he is trying to save? is love involved? This is pre-9/11 so it must be something pretty drastic because airport security wasn't as tight then... Was the provoking action taken immediately before the shooting or was it revealed ahead of time (i.e. - a bomb threat)? |

So, just to recap, the guy was at an airport, and he got shot, because he did something that security guards thought was a threat. Correct? Did what he was doing involve a weapon, or perceived weapon? A liquid? Gas (or what they thought was gas)? A bomb (or what was perceived as a bomb)? Box cutter? Something else? |

was he stopped at a security checkpoint Yes., the beeper went off or something suspicious was in the x-ray No. and he jokingly said it was a bomb? He did say he had a bomb, but you don't have the circumstances quite right. You've most of the sequence of events right. But there's an important detail of the "WHY" behind all of this that you still have to figure out. Hint: Disability. |

Did he have tourettes syndrome and couldn't control what he was saying? YES!!! ********************SPOILER!!!******************* The man had Tourette Syndrome. Many people with Tourette's have a tendency blurt out dirty or inappropriate things in public without a whole lot of control over what they're saying (the scientific name for it is coprolalia, which literally means "sh*t-talk"). I would imagine that it happens especially in emotionally stressful situations (as is the case in this puzzle). Anyway, he's flying alone for the first time, and for whatever reason, gets chosen for a pat-down as he's going through security. He's never been through one of these before, and he panics. Unable to control his speech, he suddenly shouts out that he's got a bomb, then bolts into the secure area. The guards, thinking he's a terrorist and fearing he's about to detonate his bomb, do the only thing they can to protect the safety of the other passengers and shoot the man dead. Thanks for playing! Usmcfink, I think you've solved my last THREE puzzles now. I'll try to come up with something new to post, but it may take a while to think of something, so bear with me. |
