Shucks, seems like we maybe should've solved one or two of your latest puzzles a bit earlier there...say, a couple weeks. And hey Hannah - how's the family?

Is there some part of Halloween relevant to this puzzle other than the date itself? I. e. traditional US customs of wearing costumes, carving pumpkins etc.?

Is Elise familiar with traditional US Halloween customs? Going door-to-door to extort treats? Collecting for UNICEF? Bobbing for apples? General scariness? Is this puzzle, in fact, set in the US? If not, relevant where?

Well, now I'm glad I phrased it that way...

Was she anywhere near the relevant door at the time of the puzzle's setting? Did the relevant door open? If so, did she open it? Another person? The wind? Was it an entry to the home (vs. an internal door, I mean)? Relevant the type of domicile in which she resided?

Actually... Germans have their own version of Halloween called "Fashing" with similar customs, including the costumes. It takes place at a different time of the year though.

Is any other person or animal besides Elise relevant to the puzzle? Family member? Friend? Pet? (I once was told about a cat that loved to climb up onto high places and jump down onto his unwary prey. Worse - he was a vampire kitty. *chomp*)

Is it a single-family/detached house? A condominium? An apartment/flat? A mobile home? A tent? A treehouse? A motorhome/caravan? Fifth-wheel? Wigwam? Lean-to? Shed? Former-boxcar-converted-into-a-domicile? Former-firehouse-converted-into-a-domicile? Former-church-etc. etc.?

Did the door open to the outdoors? Did she close it after she opened it (relevant)? Did the fright happen when she opened the door? Was she opening the door to leave the home? To enter the home? Because she has OCD and has to open the door every 14 minutes? Did she realize it was Halloween? Does she have any relevant physical disability (e. g. blind, deaf, paraplegic etc.)? Any relevant mental issues (subject to panic attacks, forgetful, paranoid, bi-polar etc.)?

is she afraid of a particular thing? did she come in contact with this thing?

did someone assume she was dressed up for halloween when she wasn't? that she wasn't when she was?

did she open the door for trick-or-treaters? if so did she give them candy and they leave as usual? did she fall victim to a halloween prank? egging of a house? did she open the door thinking it was for trick-or-treaters and find out someone else was there?

is the 'relevent animal' a living animal? a costume or prop?

is the animal a cat, dog, domesticated animal?

was the animal a black cat? and she was superstitious? does superstition apply in some manner?

did she mis-understand someone else costume?

was elsa participating in any of the halloween traditions? were others (relevent to the puzzle) participating in it? was a misunderstanding caused by the standard traditions?

so her door was opened but she didn't do it? did the others relevent to this puzzle open it? did elsa expect the door to be opened?

was the others in question a single person? two people? small group? more?

shot in dark;
were the others trying to surprise elsa as a halloween prank? but elsa had a heart attack? or possible responded in another unexpected manner to the surprise which lead to her death?

going along with that guess if it was a prank did elsa think it was real? because there was something about elsa or her life the prankers didn't know which would cause her to belive the prank?

Per the response on Thursday, November 13, 2008 - 8:05 pm, she did not answer the door, correct?

In any case, she did open the door, but not to go in or out herself, and she closed it, and this was all prior to the event which frightened her? Is the relevant mental issue a phobia? Memory-related? Related to cognitive ability? Had she heard something which caused her to open the door? Seen something? Relevant what she was doing just prior to opening the door? When she opened it, did she expect to see trick-or-treaters?

I'm sorry, I don't feel like reading other people's posts. So a house door is relevant. Is it a front door? Side door? Back door? Is it relevant what part of the house the door is in? Is it an exterior door or an interior door? Is it relevant what material from which the door was made?

The only difference I can think of between a door made of opaque material and a door made of transparent material is that light can pass through the latter. Is this the relevant quality of the door? Or is there something else about doors made of transparent material that I am overlooking? If so, is it a physical property? Chemical property? Some connotation that is only relevant to humans?

All sight is based on light.

quote:

In optics, transparency (also called pellucidity) is the material property of allowing light to pass through. In mineralogy, another term for this property is diaphaneity. The opposite property is opacity. Transparent materials are clear—they can be seen through. Translucent materials allow light to pass through them only diffusely: they cannot be seen through. Translucency does not include see-through colored objects such as (for instance) emerald in its cut state (which is transparent) but does include things such as frosted glass which allow light to come through but no distinct images.

What I mean is that the door is not clear--you cannot see everything through it. It is not made of clear glass or plastic or any other clear material.

Common reasons that I would open the front door:

1. Getting/checking for the mail?
2. Thinking someone knocked/rang?
3. Checking to make sure it's unlocked?
4. Expecting someone and heard a car/other noise?
5. To yell at the neighbor kids to get off the lawn?
6. Just in a door-opening-kind-of-a-mood?
7. Forgot what I was going to do and opened the door anyhow?
8. Landshark?
9. Planning to go out of said door and finding it somehow more convenient when it's actually open?
10. The family aardvark needs out (believe me, this is one you want to be right on top of)?

You're overlooking something REALLY OBVIOUS. I bet most people on this forum have at some time briefly opened their front doors for this general sort of reason, although not for Elise's specific form of the reason

I think I'm kinda stuck on this.

Hmmm... (thinking aloud)
*Some person opens a door very briefly, but she would not if the door were transparent.
*The purpose of opening the door is NOT to allow matter, photons, waves, or any other form of energy to travel through the doorway.
*The purpose of opening the door is NOT directly to cause a change in the position of the door.

Is she opening the door to acquire any information about what is on the other side of the door? Would it matter if she had her eyes closed? her ears plugged? does she make any sound when she opens the door? Is she carrying anything else when she opens the door? Would she still need to open the door if she were not alone in the house? Is the weather relevant? Is it relevant whether it is light or dark outside?

Ah - so if the door were transparent, she could hang the sign inside the door. As it is, she must place it on the outside of the door?
Is the sign linked to Halloween? Does it discourage any would-be trick-or-treaters?

Doctapeppa: How does that not involve matter passing through the doorway?
She could have had one of those handy wipe-clean slates with attached pen hanging on her door already; or a sign which needs to be turned around to display the relevant message; or ...

Nimue - is this relevant to the problem? Does the physical form of the message need to be discovered?

So the sign could have been written on paper and taped to the door, and it would have have the same effect? It is the meaning of the sign that is relevant?
Does it say "No trick-or-treaters, please", or something with identical meaning? Or does it discourage other visitors? Is the subsequent fright associated with a noise? an action by some other individuals? a sudden moment of realisation by Elise that she has made a mistake in placing the sign?

Are there people that Elise wanted to come, but had forgotten? Does a group of trick-or-treaters arrive, and react to the sign? Does another individual or group (not t-or-t'ing) arrive and react to the sign? Is this reaction one of acceptance? or do they react negatively?

These 'possibly's - an individual or group see the sign and react negatively? but the exact identity of the group is irrelevant? They do something to insult her? They say something? They ring the doorbell anyway? They make a sound of some nature?

Is the fright caused directly by the group? by what they say? by what they do? Is it caused when the group is outside the door, or later?
Is the fright caused by something that Elise sees? hears? smells? touches?

Apologies, I'm not entirely sure what of substance there is left to solve here...

So after putting the sign up, she is frightened/disturbed after a group see the sign and utter some form of insult. Is this a fair recap?

Do we need to find out the specific substance of what was said? Is there some special reason why this insult scares Elise, beyond fear of impending damage to property and/or to herself?

Is Elise's precise location at the moment of the fright relevant? Is she performing some specific action at the time (answering the telephone? watching TV? opening the door? eating or drinking?)
Do the group of people write a sign of their own? or add a comment to Elise's sign? Do they leave something physical outside Elise's house? Are they still near the house when Elise is frightened?

In some locations, sex offenders are required to post signs on Halloween stating that they cannot open the door for trick-or-treaters. Was her sign mistaken for this?

********* SPOILER **************
Elise didn't want to be bothered by trick-or treaters so she posted a sign on her front door, saying "No trick or treatrers." Little did she know that sex offenders are REQUIRED to do this. Imagine her horror when she found out that her neighbors inferred that she was a sex offender! By the way, this could have happened to me, because I nearly posted such a sign. Fortunately, I found out in time. Thanks for sticking with it, everyone, & for posting it, Biograd, & you know where to find my new puzzle.

Sorry Nimue - would never have got this one. I've never heard of this practice before. And I always put out a sign because here in the UK trick or treating is fairly new and carried out often by shifty looking teenagers...

I wanted to put out that sign out for these reasons: I don't like to be disturbed by ringing doorbells, I don't enjoy the company of children, & candy doesn't keep in my house (I eat it right away) & of course I would not be interested in distributing wholesome "treats" like apples.
