Here's a quickie while I think of an actual puzzle :-)

The warden beckons,
"Zombies! Awake!"
They stir from their stupor,
Fearing what might be at stake.

They clutch their ears,
Cringing and writhing,
For the warden's yell,
Is far from comforting.

As they descend into the abyss,
Their thoughts two, but one,
"Either the warden is testing us,
Or he's having some fun..."

are the "zombies" meant as "you zombies" or "zombies are coming"?

Does he really wake them up?

Do they actually go down? If so, downstairs?
Deeper down than 50 m?

Is the warden H,A,M?
Are the zombies?

So there is the foreman (or whatever the boss of the firemen is called)? Who learns about a fire? And wakes up the firemen on duty? Who slide down on that pole I assume there is in all firemen stations all over the world? And go somewhere to quench a fire?

(And sorry for the limping terminology, I am not a fireman ;-))

(And sorry for the limping terminology, I am not a fireman ;-)) Good guess but the foreman could hardly be having fun right? You're close though, keep trying :-)

Do you mean that the alarm could only be a joke? Or are they training?

Is this based on a true story? Could this actually happen? Are the "zombies" zombies? If so, would they be best described as:

A snake god in religions of West Africa and elsewhere?

A person who is undead; a corpse reanimated by a supernatural force or a spell, with no soul and no will of its own?

A person who is apathetic?

A human being in a state of extreme mental exhaustion?

An information worker who has signed a nondisclosure agreement?

Nickname for a conscripted member of the Canadian military during World War II who was assigned to home defense rather than to combat in Europe?

Is the warden:

The chief administrator of a prison?

A person in charge of the enforcement of certain laws?

A governing official of a different type?

Fire drills relevant? Smoke detectors? Carbon monoxide detectors?

*********SPOILER**********

The poem is just a caricature of an experience I had while I was in my university hostel. The warden was quite frankly a wannabe-dictator and actually referred to as 'inmates' in communications.

He got the idea of doing a surprise fire drill at midnight, and sadistically picked a day when we were exhausted from a string of exams.

The fire alarm in our hostel was probably built to serve as both mating calls for blue whales in the Indian Ocean and a church bell in the Vatican, so I wouldn't be surprised if a few of us lost some of our hearing (no jokes!).

As we walked down the stairs with curses on our lips, we couldn't help but wonder if the oppressor was laughing inside...

Thanks for playing along...

Have any of you had any funny/interesting/disturbing fire drill experiences? Do share :-)
