Are the freezers for use in a lab? in a conference room or office?

Are they meant to be used "as is", i.e. by putting something inside of them? Or are they going to be disassembled and the compressor/tubing bent around something else to keep it cool? (I've known some people who made water cooling systems for their CPUs as a kind of geeky accessory--though I don't know of anyone using freezer/fridge parts for something like that)

So will the university use the freezers to keep a solid form of another chemical compound (than water) that is a liquid (or gas) at room temperature?

Or, will the thing kept in the freezers be a material, for example a biological specimen, that contains water (and therefore there will be some ice in the freezer, though not as we would usually think)?

***** RECAP *****

The university I work at has recently bought a large number of freezers. The freezers are used to store something containing water over a long period of time, but they are not in a lab, a conference room or an office.

Why did the university buy them?

Are they all storing the same thing? If so, is each thing the size of a freezer? Are there many things in each refrigerator? Or are all the freezers storing one thing in parts?

Are they storing a living organism? A dead organism? Part(s) of a dead organism? Something edible?

Are they storing something made of paper? Of wood? Something that might once have had organisms on it/in it?

Did the university have the things before they got the freezers? Do the things need to be frozen to remain intact? Does freezing them change something about them? Will they pull some or all of the things out at any time during storage? Will the things be used for a practical purpose?

Did the university have the things before they got the freezers? Yes. Do the things need to be frozen to remain intact? Yes! Does freezing them change something about them? Apart from freezing them? No-ish. Will they pull some or all of the things out at any time during storage? Yes. Will the things be used for a practical purpose? Eventually.

So we already have that the freezers would be used by a university to preserve the paper in books. Which of the following (if any) is the relevant information we're still missing?

That these particular books are especially prone to disintegration, and why?
That these books are to be kept for an unusually long period of time, and why?
That something about the environment of this university accelerates the process of paper decomposing?
There is some special reason that, in this instance, freezing is a better preservation method than some other way?

******* SPOILER *******
Heavy rains flooded the university library last autumn. Rescuing all the books at the same time proved impossible, so the university decided to freeze the books to prevent growth of fungi, mould and whatnot. As soon as they find out how to treat them, they will take them out a few at a time and slowly replenish the library.

True story, BTW. Thank you all for playing.
