He did get rid of it, but he should have chosen another way to do so.

Was it garbage from a party, and he gave it to a young boy who begged for it while assuring him that it would get thrown away within 24 hours because he just needed it for a Halloween costume? :-D

On a (slightly) more serious note, is "it" alive? formerly alive? organic? non-organic?

Should he have chosen another way to get rid of it because the way he did use was illegal? costly? time-consuming? unsafe?

Is another person involved? If so, is another person involved in the action of "getting rid of it"? Did it originally belong to him? To someone else? Is it solid? Liquid? Gas? Multiple objects?

Was the way he chose impolite? Impractical? Failing to see future consequences?

Did his way of getting rid of it caused any harm to the other person? If yes, what kind of harm did it cause - physical harm, mental trauma? Is the 'other person' the only person relevant to the puzzle?

For simplicity: A = person who got rid of it
B = person who received it

Is a crime involved? If so, is A the perpetrator? B someone who could implicate him or nab him?

Maybe A stashed a gun someplace that he thought was safe, but it was right under B's nose?

If not a crime, has A done anything he could be ashamed/guilty/embarassed about?

Is B a police officer? Detective?
Did A sell this thing to B?
Is the object: A gun? Knife? Hammer? Some sort of machine?
What was A's crime? Murder? Theft? Robbery? Rape?
Did B inform the police/authorities and cause A to get arrested?

SO, A entered a bank and looted money from B (who was sort of a cashier) at gun point. Somewhere, by mistake, he put the gun down. B picked it up and threatened A to stay put and called police?

Oh...I thought Finno had it there!

Did the criminal put the gun somewhere in/around the bank and then left with the money? Did he leave it behind on purpose?
Did the banker find the gun? Or see where the gun was placed?
Was the criminal identified thru his fingerprints on the gun? Then picked up later by the police?

Was the gun left behind by A proved a key in finding out who A was plus his whereabouts and hence he was arrested? It would be best to break this down into three questions but I believe you were OTRT

OTRT Means?
Anyways,
The gun left behind by A helped in -
finding his identity?
finding his whereabouts?
framing charges against him?

OTRT Means? on the right topic/trail/heading in the right direction
Anyways,
The gun left behind by A helped in -
finding his identity? yope, there is an FA here.

finding his whereabouts? yope, there is an FA here

framing charges against him? I think there might be a little language issue here so I'll explain a bit. The gun left behind by A did help the police press charges against him - these were real charges, not false. Some googling shows to me that in some countries framing means real charges, whereas in the US, framing usually means someone set you up to be arrested for something you didn't do

Did B (and hence police) know who A was and the mistake of leaving behind the gun helped them press charges against him?
Was there any special markings on the gun (name or initials printed etc) that proved conclusive?
Is the gun itself relevant for pressing charges against A or the way he left it behind relevant? Or both?

Would finding out what kind of robbery/the loot from the robbery be relevant? If so, was the goods: just money? just jewels? money and jewels? something else? either of these and something else?

Was the gun a special/unique gun?

Did the gun get left behind and A leave the bank? Did A unintentionally give B the gun, but stayed in the bank until police were notified and caught him?

B is a banker. A teller, in particular?

Perhaps A gave B a bag/some other container that contained the money that he wanted to deposit? And the gun was in that bag? Or maybe the money was marked in some way?

****Spoiler****

Yes, this man robbed a business and ended up with a bag of a coins. A few days later he took the bag of coins to the bank to cash in but he left the gun in the bag of coins he handed to the bank teller. Knowing about the recent robbery, she took the coins aside, and called the police. I can't recall the exact nature of the business at the moment but it was a place you would expect to have a lot of coins like a laundromat or an arcade.
