George wakes up, enters his bathroom and looks in the mirror. He opens the bathroom cabinet and stares for a moment. Then he enters his son's room, rips the fenders off all of his sons model cars, puts them in a box, and heads into town |

Did he need specifically the fenders (as in, the ones that belonged to his son's model cars)? Could they have been fenders from the same kinds of models but that didn't belong to his son? Could something else (or several something elses) of the same width? length? depth? size? shape? material? color? density? have sufficed for his purposes? Did he actually want the fenders for some purpose? Or was having them in the box enough for what he needed? Was the combination of the fenders and the box relevant (i.e., did they serve a purpose together as one item)? Did the box serve any purpose other than as a way to carry the fenders? |

Did anything relevant happen before? involving: George? his son? the bathroom cabinet? the missing object? the fenders? other persons? a place to be found out? Is the idea of a "close shave" as in a near-accident relevant? (for instance, "our cream will give you such a close shave, you'll think you scraped your fender!") |

was this sort of a publicity gimmick? did the company indeed offer to exchange fenders for shaving cream? if so: was the offer meant serious? did the man just want to find out whether the company would honour it for good? (given that a toy car is usually more expensive than a jar of shaving cream) Is there a reason why he ripped off all fenders and not just one? was the offer to weigh off the fenders with shaving cream? |

Is it relevant that he was in a car when he saw the billboard? Is it relevant that not he was driving? Was there a relevant conversation between him and the driver? Are any words or expressions with double meanings involved? Was the place he went to with the fenders a shaving cream company? the factory of the company? was this place mentioned on the billboard? |

Did he get the shaving cream in a supermarket? Did the billboard advertise a special offer by the shaving-cream company? Did he misunderstand one of the words on the billboard? Homographs relevant? Homophones? |

Did he read exactly the text that the company intended to put on the billboard? If not, had the billboard been printed out correctly? was there any graffiti or similar on the billboard? had there been vandalism? So if he had read the billboard by walking by on the side of the road the puzzle wouldn't work? Would the puzzle work if he had been on the back seat of a motorcycle? Why was there a reference to cars and fenders in the text of the billboard: to attract people driving by in a car? to announce a special offer linked to cars? it was a clever advertising text with a subtle link between cars and shaving cream? Apart from the text was there anything else relevant about the billboard? Did he know the place where he went with the fenders only through the billboard? Had he been at this place before? |

Did he read exactly the text that the company intended to put on the billboard? yes If not, had the billboard been printed out correctly? see prev was there any graffiti or similar on the billboard? no had there been vandalism?no So if he had read the billboard by walking by on the side of the road the puzzle wouldn't work? You would not be walking where he saw the billboard (this is based on a true story). This question is irrelevant to the puzzle though Would the puzzle work if he had been on the back seat of a motorcycle? yes Why was there a reference to cars and fenders in the text of the billboard: to attract people driving by in a car? yes to announce a special offer linked to cars? no it was a clever advertising text with a subtle link between cars and shaving cream? no Apart from the text was there anything else relevant about the billboard? no Did he know the place where he went with the fenders only through the billboard? no Had he been at this place before? yes this question Was the place he went to with the fenders a shaving cream company? should be answered "no" |

Did the company have in mind real car fenders, not fenders from toy cars? did they expect that the material (recycling) value of a car fender is much higher than that of a jar of shaving cream? So that they could make a profit on this exchange? Did they want the people to collect thrown away fenders? and so, to clean up the motorways? or did it have new (not yet damaged) fenders? .. wait, did the billboard sign say "rip the fenders off your car"? and the man took it literal? (that is, just rip them off, not send them in) so, he took the fenders, went to the store, showed them, collected the jar of shaving cream, and put the fenders back? |

****Spoiler******* The man had seen previously seen this series of Burma Shave signs: Free offer! Rip a fender off your car mail it in for a half-pound jar Burma-Shave And though the signs were meant as a joke on the number of coupons on the era, Burma shave did give everyone who sent in a fender (real or from a toy a car) a free half pound jar of burma shave. |
