Good Morning.

Would he have ripped off the fenders if he had not opened the bathroom cupboard? If he had not looked in the mirror? If he had not entered the bathroom?

Would he have ripped off the fenders if he had not opened the bathroom cupboard? If he had not looked in the mirror? If he had not entered the bathroom? All of these actions are relevant as to why he ripped off the fenders.

Was he angry at his son? Was it his bathroom cabinet? His son's? His wife's? Did he find something in it that caused his reaction? Did he find something missing that caused his reaction? Was he concerned for the safety of his son? Did he actually take the box with the car fenders into town? Did he plan on selling them?

Was the reflective surface of his bathroom mirror screwed up (chipped, flaking, or otherwise messing up reflections)? Did he want to melt the fenders down to get the metal they were made of? Did he want the metal to fix the mirror?

If not, were the fenders made of metal? plastic? another material?

Did he need specifically the fenders (as in, the ones that belonged to his son's model cars)? Could they have been fenders from the same kinds of models but that didn't belong to his son? Could something else (or several something elses) of the same width? length? depth? size? shape? material? color? density? have sufficed for his purposes?

Did he actually want the fenders for some purpose? Or was having them in the box enough for what he needed? Was the combination of the fenders and the box relevant (i.e., did they serve a purpose together as one item)? Did the box serve any purpose other than as a way to carry the fenders?

So we should find out the object that was missing in the cabinet? Is it something you would typically find in a bathroom cabinet? Is it linked to fenders? linked to Georges son? did his son take the object away?
Are other people involved? Is any misunderstanding involved? Any bet?
Did George want to punish his son?
Did he take off the fenders of the right sides? left? front? rear? all?
Did anything relevant happen before? involving: George? his son? the bathroom cabinet? the missing object? the fenders? other persons? a place to be found out?
Did his son built the cars? his father? or were they already finished when his son got them?
What is he going to do in town: go to a shop? meet someone?

So George looked in the mirror to see if he had to shave? And, realizing he did, opened the cabinet to get his shaving cream? Which wasn't there?

The relevant thing he saw in the countryside: related to shaving cream? a building? infrastructure? a vehicle? a person? part of nature? water?
Did the thing he saw give the idea to exchange fenders for shaving cream?
Are the fenders of the car in which he was sitting relevant (I hope the question is clearer now)?
Did the exchange of the fenders for shaving cream involve: a person? a shop? a building? a vehicle? a place where you usually find shaving cream? a place where you usually find fenders? an illegal action? money?
Was the shaving cream he got in a standard receptacle? like the one he had before?
Is it relevant why there was no more shaving cream in the bathroom cabinet?
Why did he not just buy shaving cream: he had no money? there was no open shop nearby? he wanted a particular shaving cream? getting shaving cream was not the only reason for the exchange? he was a bit weird? someone had told him to do so?

See wikipedia for a definition of infrastructure. Driving in the car, did he see any relevant man made structure for: transport? communication? energy supply? water supply? Did he see any relevant object?
The place he went to with the fenders: a hairdresser's/barber's shop? a hotel?
Is there any reason why he wanted to make this exchange instead of buying shaving cream?
Is there more to be found out about the particular shaving cream he wanted? Was it new? already used? by himself?

See wikipedia for a definition of infrastructure. it is not necessary for the economy to function
Driving in the car, did he see any relevant man made structure for: transport? no communication? yes energy supply? no water supply? no Did he see any relevant object? relevant to why he ripped off the fenders/wanted to exchange them for shaving cream? - yes

The place he went to with the fenders: a hairdresser's/barber's shop? a hotel? none of these

Is there any reason why he wanted to make this exchange instead of buying shaving cream? wouldn't everyone prefer to exchange model car fenders for shaving cream instead of buying it? Or perhaps he was doctapeppa's grandfather

Is there more to be found out about the particular shaving cream he wanted? yes but you can solve it without knowing more about it Was it new? yes already used? no - can you reuse shaving cream?? that sounds a bit silly. by himself? so no

Was he in a foreign country? he was in the U.S.A.

Was the thing he saw in the countryside a billboard? Some other type of advertising?

Did he bring the fenders to a drugstore/pharmacy? Buy the shaving cream from one?

Is the idea of a "close shave" as in a near-accident relevant? (for instance, "our cream will give you such a close shave, you'll think you scraped your fender!")

was this sort of a publicity gimmick? did the company indeed offer to exchange fenders for shaving cream? if so: was the offer meant serious?
did the man just want to find out whether the company would honour it for good? (given that a toy car is usually more expensive than a jar of shaving cream)
Is there a reason why he ripped off all fenders and not just one? was the offer to weigh off the fenders with shaving cream?

Is it relevant that he was in a car when he saw the billboard? Is it relevant that not he was driving? Was there a relevant conversation between him and the driver?
Are any words or expressions with double meanings involved?
Was the place he went to with the fenders a shaving cream company? the factory of the company? was this place mentioned on the billboard?

Did he get the shaving cream in a supermarket? Did the billboard advertise a special offer by the shaving-cream company?

Did he misunderstand one of the words on the billboard? Homographs relevant? Homophones?

Did he read exactly the text that the company intended to put on the billboard? If not, had the billboard been printed out correctly? was there any graffiti or similar on the billboard? had there been vandalism?
So if he had read the billboard by walking by on the side of the road the puzzle wouldn't work? Would the puzzle work if he had been on the back seat of a motorcycle?
Why was there a reference to cars and fenders in the text of the billboard: to attract people driving by in a car? to announce a special offer linked to cars? it was a clever advertising text with a subtle link between cars and shaving cream?
Apart from the text was there anything else relevant about the billboard?
Did he know the place where he went with the fenders only through the billboard? Had he been at this place before?

So if he had read the billboard by walking by on the side of the road the puzzle wouldn't work? You would not be walking where he saw the billboard (this is based on a true story). This question is irrelevant to the puzzle though

Did the company have in mind real car fenders, not fenders from toy cars? did they expect that the material (recycling) value of a car fender is much higher than that of a jar of shaving cream? So that they could make a profit on this exchange?
Did they want the people to collect thrown away fenders? and so, to clean up the motorways?
or did it have new (not yet damaged) fenders?

.. wait, did the billboard sign say "rip the fenders off your car"? and the man took it literal? (that is, just rip them off, not send them in)
so, he took the fenders, went to the store, showed them, collected the jar of shaving cream, and put the fenders back?

****Spoiler*******

The man had seen previously seen this series of Burma Shave signs:

Free offer!

Rip a fender off your car

mail it in

for a half-pound jar

Burma-Shave

And though the signs were meant as a joke on the number of coupons on the era, Burma shave did give everyone who sent in a fender (real or from a toy a car) a free half pound jar of burma shave.
