A soldier was shot and killed by a soldier from the opposing army. The opposing army won, but the soldier who shot him was tried with murder. |

Let's call the soldier who was shot A, and his army Army A. The soldier who shot him, and the victorious army, will be Soldier B and Army B. Is this a true story? Is the specific war relevant? If so, LTPF list of centuries and wars. Is any specific technology, tactic, or political theory relevant? Was Soldier A a loyal member of Army A, or was he actually a member of Army B in disguise? Was Soldier B a loyal member of Army B, or was he actually a member of Army A in disguise? Was A shot at short or long range? Relevant? False impressions relevant? Was soldier B found guilty? And executed? |

Bolapara, you've now got 4 active puzzles on the forum, notwithstanding that a couple of them are probably close to being $poiled. However it would be much appreciated if you could hold off any further puzzles until current ones are solved. Thanks! :-) |

I always get a bit confused with A's and B's. So to keep from getting confused, we'll switch soldier A to Abe, and soldier B, to Bill, which rephrases the statement to Abe was shot and killed by a soldier, Bill, from the opposing Army (army B). Army B won, but Bill who shot Abe was tried with murder. Is this a true story? Yope, its based on a true story but I made some changes Is the specific war relevant? yes If so, LTPF list of centuries and wars.civil war Is any specific technology, tactic, or political theory relevant? no Was Abe a loyal member of Army A, or was he actually a member of Army B in disguise? No, NoWas Bill a loyal member of Army B, or was he actually a member of Army A in disguise? No, No Was A shot at short or long range? long range by 1800 standards, probably considered short range by 2000 standards Relevant? no False impressions relevant? no Was Bill found guilty? yes And executed?Irr Was Abe a PoW? no A messenger? no Was he killed during the war? no Out of personal motives? no The rank of either soldier relevant?no |

Was he killed after the war? Before the war? You say it was the civil war. I assume that means Bill was for the Union and Abe was for the Confederacy? Correct? Assuming I am correct: Was Bill tried for murder by the United States government? By the government in the state in which he resided in? The municipality in which he resided in? Did he live in a state that was on the Confederate Side? The Union Side? That was a slave state that did not secede and so fought for the Union? Also, was Bill born in a state that would later join the Confederacy? Was Abe born in a state that would later be on the Union side? Were either of them born in a slave state? With all of these questions, I am assuming you meant the US Civil War. is this correct? |

Did the shooting occur after the war had been won? Obvious question but I have to ask -- at the time of the shooting, were both soldiers considered to be combatants, guided by the rules of war? Could this situation occur today? Or is there something specific about the Cival War that makes this puzzle possible? Is the timing of the shooting relative to the end of the war relevant? Does it involve a ceasefire? Did the shooting happen after a ceasefire or declaration was made that was either unknown or ignored by the shooter? |

Is the fact that one lived in a confederate state relevant? Was the shooting a duel? While they were soldiers during the war, the shooting happened after the war such that the shooting was no longer a legitimate act of combat by a soldier, but rather an act of murder by a citizen. Is this true? If so, does this get to the crux of the puzzle? Was the shooting an act of revenge? For circumstances that related to the war? |

Random questions trying to find the FAs: Was the shooting accidental or intentional? Did the two soldiers know each other prior to this incident? Is the color of their skin relevant? Are any of these relevant: Location of shooting? Time of shooting? Type of weapon used? The presence of other people? The shooter's state-of-mind? The victim's state-of-mind? |

Does this have anything to do with the political changes that occurred after the war, such that the country was reunited and the distinction between north and south had changed? You already answered different forms of this question, but I need to clarify: if the shooting happened after the war was over, and the soldiers were not combatants guided by the rules of war, then it seems that any shooter in that circumstance would be charged with murder unless there was some legal justification. Yet, you are saying this is not why he was charged with murder, correct? You also answered that both soldiers were neither loyal to their respective armies, nor were they acting for the opposing armies, correct? Were the solders mercenaries? Were they non-citizens? Were they born in foreign countries? We are discussing two armies -- are these the Union and Confederate armies? |

I missed something -- how did we establish it's a re-enactment? Is that the solution -- there was some kind of commemorative event after the end of the war wherein a battle or duel was reenacted for the cameras, and one of the participants, a confederate soldier, had a loaded revolver? |

*********Spoiler********* Oops, I mistook recreation as re-enactment when I was re-answering. The puzzle was based off of this event (though the man lived) http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2094737/posts "We were shooting at the Union Soldiers and suddenly the guy told us to stop after we were firing because one of the Union guys actually got shot." "I got hit in the shoulder and I thought somebody had hit me with a shovel," says Tom. What the 73-year-old was actually hit with was a round from an 1860 Colt Army Revolver. Tom says the moment he was shot, every thought ran through his mind at once. "How can I be shot? I've been doing this reenacting, who shot me? Why?" |
