If it weren't for income taxes, Russell would be even richer than he is, but how much he or anyone else ever pays in taxes is irrelevant. How come? |

Other people involved -- known to him personally? Face-to-face? Business associates? People met in passing? Politics involved? Could this have happened anywhere besides the USA? If so, could it have happened in the USSR? Is Russell an immigrant? A citizen of the US? Did something relevant change in 1964? A regulation? If the US had never instituted income tax, would Russell be richer? What if there were no income tax, but some other sort of tax (a flat tax, for example)? |

How many other people involved? 1? 2? 3? More? All the people in a certain neighborhood? City? County? State? Country? The regulation that was changed -- was it actually changed to mean something else, or was it new and had not previously existed? Did it apply to a city, county, state or entire country? Is it illegal to violate this regulation? If so, is that a felony or misdemeanor? Does the regulation apply specifically to taxes, or to something else? OK - so Russell lives in America. He and lots of other people pay income tax but how much is irrelevant here - correct? there has been a new regulation correct? but this new regulation does not relate to tax - correct? and as a result of this new regulation Russell is not as rich as he would be if it didn't exist? and this situation only arises because income taxes exist as well as this regulation? and it's not against the law to fail to adhere to this new regulation - correct? the new regulation affects how much money Russell gets - correct? does it affect his salary? does it affect how much he gets from the government? how much tax relief he gets on his income? how much he can claim in expenses without being taxed? does it have the effect of making something tax-allowable that wasn't before? does the new regulation affect how much money he gets from his clients? how much he inherits? how much he can win? from gambling? or the lottery? how much he can get for selling something? how much he can claim as a reward for finding something? does the new regulation have the effect of stopping him getting some money he would otherwise have got? or does it make him pay more than he would otherwise have to pay for something? are any of these relevant - charitable giving? gifts of money? changing currencies? criminal activity? extortion? blackmail? performance fees? copyright? academic fees? tax thresholds? is the act of filling in a tex return relevant? |

Tax thresholds are unimportant, so it's not that he can take home more of the money he has somehow won? But now he can win when before he couldn't have? He would not have been eligible to win? Does he win money? Something else? Does he win more of it than he would have? Something better than he would have otherwise? He hasn't won a lottery, and is not a gambler. Did he win a sweepstakes (like Publisher's Clearing House)? Is he rich in -- money? Possessions? Friends? Family? Land? Buildings? Would he be richer in any of these if not for the new regulation? |

Did he win money? A brand new car? Is the game show one that is still shown today? If not, was it most recently on the air in [LTPF list of decades from the invention of the TV until now]? Is Jeopardy the game show? Say, a Final Jeopardy question that he missed involving income taxes, though he still won? Or, perhaps, got right while wagering less than he otherwise would have because he wasn't confident about answering correctly when he saw the category? |

If he did not win on Jeopardy, he wouldn't have taken home any money. He would have gotten "prizes," like a vacation or something electronic. Correct? Do we need to know what question he missed? When he answered it, did he believe he had the correct answer? Was he rich before he appeared on Jeopardy? Was he actually on Jeopardy, or playing a Jeopardy computer game or something else that is not actually the gameshow? |

Yes, Ken Jennings, & he actualkly won 2.52 million! **** SPOILER ************** After the Jeopardy! regulation limiting each plater to 5 games was removed, Ken Jennings won 76 games for a total of 2,52 million. He would have gotten even richer if he hadn't flubbed a "final jeopardy" question on who was the biggest tax return preparer in the USA. Even I knew the answer--H & R Bloch.
